If you’ve picked up a JDM GRB STI without steering wheel controls and want to add them, the main harness is often more complete than people assume. What actually catches people out is the clock spring — the roll connector tucked behind the steering wheel that bridges the buttons on the wheel with the rest of the car’s wiring.
The clock spring: look here before anything else
The GRB’s clock spring (also called the roll connector or spiral cable) sits directly behind the steering wheel, under the column cowl. On a fully-specced car, the top of the unit has three connectors: one for the airbag/SRS system, a white connector for cruise control, and a green connector for audio controls.
On a JDM car that left the factory without SWC, there’s a real chance it has a simplified roll connector — one that lacks those extra plugs entirely or has them capped off with blanks. Pull the wheel and look at what’s actually there before assuming the problem is further down the car.
Fitting a full-spec clock spring is the most common fix. Used JDM units are easy enough to source. The airbag connector is the same across specs — it’s the white and green plugs that differ. Audio steering wheel controls: how the signal path works
Subaru’s audio SWC system uses a resistor ladder. Each button on the steering wheel produces a distinct resistance reading, which the head unit interprets as a command. Subaru frequently ran the harness wires regardless of whether the option was chosen — they’re just left unterminated or taped back. Before running any new cable, check the harness near the ECU connectors in the engine bay for capped-off wires. There’s a reasonable chance they’re already there waiting.
The brake switch is worth checking separately. The GRB unit has a dedicated pin for the cruise cancel signal. On no-cruise builds, that pin is often simply empty and needs a wire adding to complete the circuit.
RHD JDM specifics worth knowing
A JDM GRB hatch is right-hand drive. Most OEM button clusters sold through US Subaru parts retailers — including well-known specialists — explicitly state they don’t fit RHD cars. The button geometry and connector routing differs between LHD and RHD steering wheels. For a JDM car, source parts from a JDM importer, a Subaru dealer using JDM part numbers, or a used JDM dismantler. The eBay route can work, but verify the part is RHD-spec before committing.
