How to Build a 99-00 Honda Civic EK Hatch: B18C Swap, Manual Conversion, and the JDM Parts That Define the Build

The 99-00 EK Hatch Is Still Worth Building

The 99-00 Honda Civic hatchback — EK chassis — gets overshadowed by the EG, but it shouldn’t be. It’s light, structurally stiff for its era, and has decades of documented build history behind it from both JDM and USDM communities. Find a clean, unmodified example and it’s a legitimate starting point for a high-quality build.

Two problems come up constantly: the 99-00 facelift front end that many builders want to change, and the automatic transmission that was standard on most base hatchbacks. Neither is a dealbreaker. Both need a real plan.

B18C Into the EK: What the Swap Actually Involves

The B18C is a 1.8-liter DOHC VTEC engine — in JDM Type R spec or USDM GS-R form from the Integra. Either way, it’s a high-revving motor that lives above 7,000 rpm and rewards a lightweight platform. The EK hatch weighs very little stock. That combination works.

It is not a drop-in swap. You need the correct motor mounts for the B-series in an EK chassis (Hasport is the most commonly used), compatible axles, and the donor transmission. The wiring for VTEC must be sorted — if you’re putting an OBD2 B18C into an OBD2 EK, the harnesses are mostly cooperative, but VTEC activation still needs to be wired correctly or the engine will never pull through the cam crossover the way it’s supposed to.

One thing worth doing before the engine goes in: rebuild it first. A used JDM B18C comes with unknown history. At minimum, replace the valve seals, timing belt, water pump, and all gaskets. Skipping this step often means pulling the motor out again six months later, which costs more time than the rebuild would have.

Auto to Manual: The Full Parts List

The automatic EK is fixable. The swap is well-documented for the 96-00 chassis and the parts are available. Core requirements are: a manual transmission, a complete clutch kit (flywheel, pressure plate, clutch disc), the hydraulic clutch system (master cylinder, slave cylinder, hard line), and the full clutch pedal assembly including the bracket and clutch switch wiring.

The ECU needs to change. Running the automatic ECU with a manual transmission causes problems. You need a manual transmission ECU for the matching engine configuration. The center console also needs a shifter hole cut or replaced — a manual-spec console is the cleaner solution.

Reverse light wiring runs through the transmission switch on a manual, not the ECU like the automatic. That needs to be rerouted. None of these individual pieces are expensive. Together they add up quickly, and the labor involved is real — this is not a weekend job.

On the shift bushings: the Cusco metal kit replaces the stock plastic OEM pieces that wear out fast and create slop in the shifter. The improvement is immediately noticeable on any B-series. Do it at the same time as the swap.

Koni Yellows and Ground Control: The 50mm vs 55mm Problem

The Koni Yellow / Ground Control coilover sleeve setup has been reliable on EK builds for a long time. Adjustable damping from the Koni, adjustable ride height from the GC threaded sleeve, and Eibach springs. It works.

The problem almost no one warns about upfront: Koni makes two housing sizes for this application. 50mm and 55mm. The year of your car does not determine which size you have. You have to remove the strut and physically measure the housing diameter before ordering. Buying the wrong size means a return and a wait. It’s a simple measurement but skipping it is a common mistake.

Ground Control offers custom spring rate options on their 92-00 Civic kit, which is worth using rather than defaulting to a generic rate. What the car weighs with the new engine, how low you intend to run it, and whether it’ll see any track time all influence the right spring rate.

Helper springs make sense on any aggressively lowered setup. When the main spring is too short to stay in contact with the perch through full droop — common at low ride heights — the helper keeps it seated and eliminates the clunk. Small addition, noticeable improvement.

Converting to a 96-98 Front End on a 99-00 EK

The 99-00 facelift nose is not ugly. But the rounder 96-98 look suits a JDM-themed build better, and the EK4 SiR front end in particular is what most builders are targeting — city lights in the headlights, the right grille, the correct fenders.

This is not a bolt-on conversion. It involves the hood, bumper, headlights, fenders, and the radiator core support. Some builders swap the full core support; others adapt around the existing 99-00 unit. Either approach requires fitment work. Plan for several hours and expect to adjust the hood gaps and headlight alignment after.

OEM-sourced 96-98 pieces fit correctly. Aftermarket reproduction kits vary in quality and fitment — some are good, some require modification to close properly. If the goal is a clean finished build, hunting for OEM pieces is worth the extra time.

SSR Type C: The Reissue Explained

SSR has been producing the Type C wheel for decades. The modern version — the Type C Forged — uses current forging technology to reproduce the original six-spoke design with improved weight and strength. On a 4×100 application like the EK, 16×7.5 is a standard fitment that works well with flares or rolled fenders.

The polished lips on the original and reissue pieces look excellent when freshly done. They need upkeep. A clear lacquer over hand-polished lips slows oxidation significantly compared to bare polish, particularly in climates with road salt or aggressive cleaning chemicals. If you’re refinishing used SSRs, that step is worth adding.

Seeker: The Tokyo Shop Behind the Parts

Seeker runs out of the Suginami ward in Tokyo and has been building and tuning Hondas for a long time. Their parts catalog covers wings, spoilers, steering wheels, and exhaust components — the aesthetic is restrained, refined, and specifically designed for Honda platforms. It fits the EK build language well without going overboard.

Getting Seeker parts in the US means going through importers like Nengun or RHDJapan. Stock on specific items — particularly the version 1 spoiler and older steering wheel designs — moves slowly and sells out. Backorders are common. Build the list early and accept that some pieces will take months to arrive.

J’s Racing Flares and Committing to Fitment

J’s Racing makes the most refined overfender kit available for the EK. They blend into the body line instead of sitting on top of it. On a build running wide wheels like the SSR Type C at 16×7.5, flares make the fitment work without cutting into the inner fender or rolling the lips aggressively enough to crack the paint.

The critical step: finalize the wheel and tire fitment before cutting the fenders. J’s Racing flares require cutting the stock fender — that’s permanent. If the wheel setup changes after the flares are on, the geometry between wheel and fender changes with it. Get the wheels mounted and the offset dialed in first, then commit to the flares.

Mugen RNR: The Other Wheel Option

The Mugen RNR is a different direction from the SSR Type C — a multi-spoke design with Mugen provenance rather than the classic Japanese racing wheel look. Running two sets gives flexibility to switch the character of the car depending on the event or the season. It’s a common approach on builds that are collected over time rather than built to one specification.
