The 96-98 vs 99-00 EK Front End: Why Enthusiasts Swap Backward

Honda’s sixth-generation Civic got a mild facelift for 1999–2000 that softened the headlights into a rounder, more oval shape. The 96-98 face uses tighter, more angular headlight corners and a slightly more aggressive nose. For any EK build running wider bodywork — overfenders especially — that earlier front end tends to read cleaner. The sharper geometry echoes the lines of a wide-body kit better than the softer 99-00 profile does.

Doing the swap on a 99-00 car means sourcing a bumper, headlights, fenders, hood, and grille from a 96-98. It’s the same chassis, so most of it bolts on. Hood alignment is the part that will eat your afternoon. Plan to adjust the hinges more than once before everything sits flush.

B18C Into the EK: What the Swap Actually Involves

The B18C is a 1.8-liter DOHC VTEC engine from the JDM Honda Integra SiR — sold in the US as the Acura Integra GS-R and, in higher-output form, the Type R. It’s one of the most documented swaps into the EK because the entire B-series family shares the same engine bay footprint.

The catch: you’ll need the correct driver-side engine mount bracket and rear transmission mount bracket for the EK chassis, as these differ from what ships with the Integra engine. VTEC wiring also needs to be added to the harness if the car wasn’t already a VTEC model. Most builders run an OBD2 Integra ECU to handle fuel and ignition from the factory map, then tune from there once the engine is broken in.

Rebuilding before it goes in is a smart call if you don’t know the engine’s history. Fresh rings, seals, and valve seals give you a known baseline. Chasing an oil leak six months after an engine swap is miserable.

Full coilover kits get expensive. The Koni/Ground Control pairing has been a Honda staple for decades because it threads the needle between adjustability and ride quality without serious money.

Ground Control makes threaded aluminum sleeve kits specific to the 92-00 Civic and Del Sol. Thread the sleeve onto the strut body, install an Eibach spring, and you get height adjustability from roughly half an inch to about three inches of drop depending on spring rate and perch position. Koni yellow shocks — rebound-adjustable — are the standard pairing. You tune the rebound to match the spring rate you’re running.

The helper spring is worth understanding specifically. On a sleeve-over-shock setup, if the main spring is stiff enough that it doesn’t compress much at static ride height, it can unseat at full suspension droop — there’s nothing keeping it on the perch when the suspension extends completely. A short helper spring sits between the main spring and the lower seat to maintain contact throughout the travel range. It’s not adding spring rate in any meaningful sense; it’s just keeping the assembly from falling apart.

SSR Type C in 16-Inch: The Classic JDM Forged Wheel

The SSR Type-C is a forged single-piece wheel with a deep dish profile and multi-spoke design rooted in the early JDM scene. The standard 16-inch offering came in 16×7 sizing with 4×100 bolt pattern and an offset in the low-to-mid forties, which fits the EK cleanly without aggressive spacer work.

These went out of production years ago. The “king reissue” is a limited run SSR brought back to meet demand from Honda and Toyota builders who want the original design. Having used sets refinished — lips hand-polished, centers repainted — is the norm. Oxidation and curb rash accumulate on any set that’s actually been driven, and a proper polish restores the look without having to hunt for a mint example.

Mugen RNR: The Other Wheel You Actually Have to Hunt For

Mugen RNR wheels are 15-inch forged pieces in 4×100 bolt pattern — sized for the Civic’s factory fitment. These are genuine Mugen product, made in Japan, now discontinued. A clean set in 4×100 has become genuinely hard to find.

Running two different wheel candidates at once while the build is still in progress isn’t unusual. One set tends to win once the suspension is set and the ride height is dialed in. The SSR 16s and Mugen 15s are different enough in proportion that you’ll know which one fits the overall direction once the car is sitting right.

J’s Racing Wide Fenders on the EK

J’s Racing is a Tokyo tuning house with a long history of Honda-specific development. Their wide fender kit for the EK adds 15mm per side over the stock fender line. That’s enough extra room to run meaningfully wider wheels and tires without dialing in severe negative camber just to keep rubber from rubbing.

The flares are designed to blend with the stock bumper, which keeps the look cohesive rather than grafted-on. There’s a vent built into the fender arch — it’s functional, pulling air turbulence away from the tire sidewall to reduce drag at speed. On a car this light, those details add up.

CTR Roof Wing and Collecting Seeker Trim

The EK9 Civic Type R roof-mount spoiler — the CTR wing — mounts at the top of the hatch opening rather than at the trailing edge of the lid. Small by modern standards. But it’s OEM Honda fitment from the factory JDM Type R, which makes it a desirable piece for an EK build chasing period-correct trim over aftermarket substitutes.

Seeker is a smaller Tokyo-based brand that focuses exclusively on Honda vehicles. Their parts — steering wheels, spoilers, trim pieces — are developed through actual motorsport and street tuning experience rather than catalog filling. They don’t turn up on mainstream parts sites. You order direct from Japan and wait. That patience is part of the collecting process for this kind of build, and it’s reflected in how the community treats these parts.

Manual Swap and the Cusco Shift Bushing

Converting an auto EK to a manual means a compatible gearbox, clutch pedal assembly, clutch master and slave cylinders, and some wiring updates for the reverse light and neutral switch. The Cusco shift bushing kit replaces the factory rubber bushings in the shifter linkage with tighter-tolerance units. The factory rubber wears down and introduces slop — the throw feels vague and the gate gets hard to hit cleanly. The Cusco kit firms everything up. It’s one of those parts that costs little and makes a noticeable difference the first time you drive after installation.
