Adding Steering Wheel Controls to a JDM GRB Subaru WRX STI

If your JDM GRB STI came without steering wheel controls, you can retrofit them — but it involves more than bolting on a different steering wheel. The signal path has three distinct links, and depending on how your car was specced from the factory, any one of them might be missing.

The Three-Part Wiring Chain

Steering wheel control signals travel from the buttons on the wheel, through the clock spring (the rotating electrical connector in the column), then along the body harness to the head unit. Every section needs to be intact for the controls to work.

The section most owners assume is fine — and most often isn’t — is the clock spring.

The Clock Spring Is Usually the Bottleneck

The clock spring, which Subaru officially calls the steering roll connector, allows the wheel to rotate freely while keeping the electrical connections live. JDM GRB models specced without steering wheel controls were frequently built with the basic roll connector that handles the airbag and horn but omits the SWC contacts entirely.

Before you buy anything, pull the lower steering column covers (two screws) and look at your existing clock spring. An SWC-equipped unit will have three connectors: a large plug for the airbag, a smaller one for horn and cruise, and a third — often a green plug — specifically for the audio steering wheel controls. If that third connector is absent or has no corresponding plug on the harness side, you need a different clock spring. The correct OEM part for the pre-facelift GRB era (2008–2010) is 83196FG020; the 2011–2014 facelift uses 83196FG030. Verify fitment against your exact build date before ordering.

The Body Harness: Often Fine, But Check

Subaru typically uses the same body harness across multiple trim levels within a generation, leaving unused wire runs simply unterminated rather than deleting them. That means the conductors between the steering column and the radio slot are often already present on a no-controls JDM car — but “often” is not “always.”

The only reliable way to know is to check. Pull the head unit and look at the 20-pin factory radio connector. On GRB-generation cars, Pin 4 (SWC1+) and Pin 14 (SWC–) carry the audio control signals, with Pin 13 sometimes used for a second SWC channel depending on spec. If those pin slots are empty, you will need to run wire or source an adapter harness that populates them.

Cruise Control and Audio Controls Are Different Circuits

It is worth treating these separately. Cruise control signals travel from the wheel through the clock spring to a dedicated connector that runs to the cruise module and ECU — a path that is more commonly pre-wired on JDM cars because the cruise hardware itself was often fitted even when the steering wheel lacked the controls. No guarantees, but the cruise wiring has better odds of being there already.

Audio controls are the harder one. Those signals terminate at the head unit via the 20-pin connector, and whether those specific pins are populated comes down to how your individual car was built. Do not assume.

What You Are Likely to Need

  • The OEM JDM GRB steering wheel with control clusters (which you have already found on eBay — verify the seller confirms it is from an RHD car)
  • Possibly a replacement clock spring with SWC contacts populated — source from a GRB that originally had controls, or buy OEM new using the part numbers above
  • If the body harness SWC pins are empty: wire to run from the clock spring connector to the 20-pin radio plug, or a complete adapter harness
  • If running an aftermarket head unit: a steering wheel control interface such as the Axxess ASWC-1, which translates the resistor-network SWC signals into the protocol the aftermarket unit expects

Aftermarket Head Unit Considerations

If the factory radio has been replaced, the OEM SWC signals need to go through an interface module before they reach the new unit. The Axxess ASWC-1 is the most widely used option for Subarus; it connects between the SWC output on the 20-pin harness and the aftermarket head unit, and it auto-learns the button assignments. Some Pioneer and Sony units need an additional adapter cable on top of the ASWC-1, so check model-specific compatibility before ordering rather than assuming plug-and-play.

If the stock head unit is still in the car and the wiring is intact, the controls should work natively once the clock spring situation is resolved. The OEM radio on the GRB was designed to accept those inputs without any additional module.

First, check the clock spring — physically count the connectors. Second, check the 20-pin radio plug for populated SWC pins. Third, decide what to buy based on what is actually missing, not what you assume might be missing. This order saves you sourcing the wrong parts or doing the job twice.
