GM’s Hidden Factory Tow Hooks: Fourth-Gen Camaro and Firebird Had Them All Along

GM Built Factory Tow Hooks Into the Fourth-Gen F-Body. Almost Nobody Knew.

Buried in the factory parts manual for the 1998–2002 Camaro and Firebird are complete illustrated assemblies for both a front and a rear tow hook. Not an aftermarket add-on. Not a dealer accessory catalog item. Factory hardware, with genuine GM part numbers, listed under specific RPO option codes.

The discovery surfaced in mid-2023 when a forum member was flipping through a PDF of the factory Camaro parts manual and stumbled on it while looking for something else entirely. It apparently sparked no recognition anywhere — no threads on FRRAX, nothing on CZ28. For hardware that appears in the OEM documentation with full diagrams and part numbers, it had stayed remarkably invisible for over two decades.

The Three RPO Codes

There are three relevant option codes. Two cover towing; one covers something different:

  • V76 — Hook, Tow (front)
  • VR6 — Hook, Tie-Down, Shipping
  • VR7 — Hook, Tow, Second, Rear

The VR6 and VR7 distinction is easy to miss and worth understanding. VR6 is a shipping tie-down — the kind of attachment point a transport carrier uses to strap a car to a flatbed. VR7 is an actual rear tow hook for recovery use. They serve different functions and are documented as separate assemblies with separate part numbers. The parts manual lists both under the rear bumper illustration for the 1998–2002 F-body.

Front Tow Hook Assembly (V76)

The front assembly consists of three components, all associated with V76:

  • 10213599 — Plate, Front Tow Hook Mount
  • 10191866 — Hook, Front Tow
  • 10255857 — Nut, front tow hook reinforcement (grade 9 fastener)

All three are discontinued at GM Parts Giant. OEMCats lists the mounting plate as unavailable. The parts manual caption for this illustration reads ‘1998-2002 F BUMPER/FRONT,’ which suggests the hardware applies specifically to the later fourth-gen bumper design rather than the full 1993–2002 run. Whether the earlier bumpers share similar provisions has not been mapped out.

No confirmed car with V76 has surfaced in the enthusiast community. That makes the used-parts supply essentially zero — you cannot pull them off a known-equipped car if nobody has found one yet. For the front, fabrication or an aftermarket solution is the only realistic path right now.

Rear Tow Hook and Tie-Down Assembly (VR6 and VR7)

The rear side is more promising. Four parts make up the assembly:

  • 10238267 — Spacer, Rear Tow Hook with spring clip (part 18 in the factory diagram)
  • 10247034 — Clevis, Rear Tie Down
  • 10191861 — Hook, Rear Tow
  • 10225315 — Bolt, Rear Tow Hook — discontinued

Three of the four parts were still showing as purchasable at the time of the original discovery. Only the mounting bolt is discontinued. Since it is a hardware fastener, a substitute matching the thread specification and grade from the service manual should work. This makes the rear install a viable bolt-on project, assuming you can source the remaining NOS parts.

How to Find Your RPO Sticker

The RPO sticker location changed partway through the generation. On 1993 through early 1997 cars, it is inside the glovebox. From late 1997 through 2002, it moved to the driver’s door jamb edge. If you have been looking in the wrong spot, that explains coming up empty.

The codes to look for are V76 (front hook), VR6 (shipping tie-down), and VR7 (rear tow hook). None appear to be common. The person who originally found this hardware in the manual checked their own sticker and found none of the three codes present. These options may have been factory-installed only on specific fleet orders, export configurations, or other non-standard builds.

Why Would GM Engineer These In?

A few explanations make sense. The most straightforward is manufacturing logistics. Getting cars on and off the assembly line, and then securing them for transport to dealers, requires attachment points. VR6 — the shipping tie-down — fits this use case exactly. A purpose-engineered tie-down is simply better than improvising around a bumper cover.

Another possibility is fleet or export specification. GM built variant configurations for police fleets, government orders, and specific export markets throughout the fourth-gen production run. A fleet requirement for tow points — especially in markets with different roadside recovery expectations — could have driven the engineering even if retail buyers never ordered it.

The front hook is harder to explain through the shipping or fleet lens. Front tow hooks are fundamentally a performance-driving item. Many track day organizations and road racing clubs require them for safety. If GM had at any point been developing a factory-backed track variant beyond the SS and Trans Am WS6 spec, a front tow hook provision belongs on that spec sheet. That is speculation, but it is a cleaner explanation than a transport tie-down for the front bumper position.

What to Do If You Want These on Your Car

For the front, fabrication is currently the only realistic route. The factory parts are not in the supply chain, and no documented car with V76 has provided a reference installation. There are aluminum tow hook solutions available for the third-gen F-body (1985–1992) from specialty vendors, but fitment to the fourth-gen bumper structure would need careful verification before anyone trusts it at speed.

For the rear, the install looks doable. Source the three available parts, find a bolt substitute matching the factory thread spec and grade, and document the process with photos. No confirmed installation photo of these factory parts exists anywhere in the community record. The first person to complete the rear install and document it will be providing genuine reference material.

If V76, VR6, or VR7 appears on your RPO sticker, photograph it — and then look for the actual hardware on the car. That is the missing piece nobody has closed yet.
