Drag Car Tow Points: Frame Loops, Bolt-On Hooks, and What Road Course Rules Actually Require

The Short Answer

Weld a steel loop to the front frame rail. For a drag car that gets winched onto a trailer and towed back to the pits after every run, that one piece of hardware handles both jobs — no interference with bodywork, no reliance on the bumper absorber, strong enough for whatever a standard winch strap puts through it.

Why the Trans Am Front End Creates the Problem

The long Pontiac nose on F-body cars extends well ahead of the front subframe. The bumper cover, the impact bar, and the styrofoam absorber behind it are all right there — but none of them are built to carry tow loads. Getting to the impact bar also usually means cutting through the lower fascia. That is the real issue: the obvious attachment point is not structural.

The front subframe — the K-member — is the anchor point you want. It is tied into the chassis, it is beefy, and on most F-body cars there are unused holes near the front of the subframe that give you something to work with if you want a bolt-on solution instead of welding.

Option 1: Welded Steel Loop

This is what most drag cars end up with. Take 5/8-inch mild steel rod, heat one end, and wrap it around a 2-inch OD pipe to form a loop, then weld the eye closed. Weld that loop onto the front frame rail somewhere accessible but behind the nose. Strip the frame back to bare shiny metal before you put heat to it.

Commercial weld-on tow hooks exist too if you would rather skip the fabrication step. Purpose-made 1/4-inch steel weld-on hooks designed for chassis mounting are available from race fabrication suppliers — same principle, less time at the workbench.

For the winch specifically, position the loop as close to centerline as possible. A centered point means the cable pulls straight rather than at an angle, which keeps the car tracking cleanly up the trailer ramps instead of wanting to walk sideways.

Option 2: Bolt-On Bracket

If you would rather not weld — or if the car might return to street duty — a bolt-on bracket is a clean alternative. Fabricate a 1/4-inch steel plate with a welded eyebolt or coupling nut, drill through the frame rail, and bolt it from both sides with grade-8 hardware. Some F-body builders have used the existing front subframe holes to avoid drilling entirely.

The tradeoff is more potential failure points than a weld. For a car that takes winch loads every race day, make sure the bolts are grade-8 and the plate is thick enough to spread the load across more than one fastener.

Option 3: Strap Routed Through the Bumper Opening

Some drag car owners just loop a heavy nylon strap through an opening in the lower bumper cover and tie it around a frame member behind the fascia. Fast. Requires zero fabrication. Works fine for light-duty towing — a golf cart pulling you back to the pits is well within its limits.

For winching onto a trailer it is less ideal. The strap has to bend sharply around whatever it is tied to, which cuts into its effective load rating, and it will chafe through over time if you are using it every race day.

Rear Tow Points

For loading onto a trailer you need the rear as much as the front. The winch hooks to the front tow point to pull the car up, but the rear is what gets strapped down once the car is positioned. On most F-body cars the rear frame horns are accessible through the wheel wells or underneath near the rear bumper area.

Welded loops at both rear frame horns give you symmetrical tie-down points — most trailer manufacturers assume four-corner strapping, not just front-only. A drag car being towed back to the pits gets pulled from the front, but when loading, a rear anchor keeps the nose from lifting when the winch cable goes tight.

What Road Course Rules Actually Require

SCCA mandates a tow eye or tow strap at both the front and rear of every competition car. Minimum inside diameter for a tow eye is 2 inches. Both points have to be accessible without removing bodywork or other panels. NASA adds a marking requirement: tow points must be indicated with arrows in yellow, red, or orange, and the opening needs to be large enough to pass a golf ball through.

NHRA drag racing is different. The “toe hook” in NHRA rules refers to the throttle return mechanism that pulls the foot throttle back to idle if the linkage sticks — not a vehicle tow point. There is no dedicated mandatory tow hook section in the NHRA rulebook comparable to what SCCA requires. Individual drag strips may add their own requirements, so check directly with your track.

If your T/A ever pulls double duty at an SCCA event, a front loop with at least 2 inches of clear inside diameter plus a matching rear point covers you for both uses without any additional hardware.

Hardware Notes

A 5/8-inch mild steel rod loop matches what rally cars use and aligns with common tow strap load ratings. Aim for at least 2 inches of clear ID inside the loop — that covers the practical need and hits SCCA compliance in one shot.

Use a rated tow hook or soft shackle at the strap end. Not a hardware-store S-hook. The weakest link in most tow setups is the connection point, not the strap itself, and an S-hook that straightens out under load is a fast way to put a car into the trailer door.
