S211 E320 CDI OM648 DPF Delete and Remap: What Actually Moves the Needle on Fuel Economy

Start here: the remap likely does more for economy than the delete

If fuel economy is the goal on an S211 E320 CDI with the OM648, a remap will probably get you further than gutting the DPF. That’s a counterintuitive answer, but it matters because the two modifications carry very different risk profiles — especially in the UK — and understanding why changes how you should approach the whole thing.

The DPF hurts economy in a specific way on these cars: active regeneration cycles. When soot loading in the filter reaches a threshold, the ECU injects extra fuel post-combustion to raise exhaust temperature and burn the soot off. Each regen consumes real fuel and does nothing for propulsion. On a standard map, and particularly if the car does a lot of short urban trips, those regens can happen often enough to noticeably dent your rolling average.

A good remap addresses this indirectly. Better injection timing and improved combustion efficiency mean less soot produced per mile, which means the filter loads up more slowly and regens happen less often. You’re not deleting the DPF — you’re making it do less work. That’s the economy win, and it doesn’t require anything illegal.

Physical DPF removal on a road-registered vehicle in the UK is illegal. Full stop.

Under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations, a vehicle must meet the emissions standard it was built to comply with. Remove the DPF and it doesn’t. The DVSA checks for the filter visually at MOT — you don’t even need to fail an emissions test to get flagged. A missing or clearly bypassed DPF is an automatic MOT failure, which makes the car untaxable and uninsurable for road use.

Fines for drivers can reach £1,000. Garages caught carrying out the work face prosecution and significantly higher penalties. There’s also the insurance question: a modification that breaches construction and use regulations gives your insurer grounds to void the policy on any claim — accident or otherwise.

Enforcement has tightened heading into 2026. DVSA roadside operations have expanded, and in some areas roadside emission-sensing cameras are being deployed to flag high-particulate vehicles mid-journey, not just at test time. A software-only delete — where the filter body stays physically in place but the ECU ignores it — still carries MOT risk because inspectors check that the unit is present and functioning.

None of this means nobody does it. But walk into any tuner conversation on this topic knowing what you’re actually signing up for.

What a remap delivers on the OM648

The OM648 is Mercedes’ 3.2-litre inline-six diesel, fitted to E320 CDI models across the W211 and S211 through much of the mid-2000s. It responds well to remapping. There’s a reasonable body of real-world experience around this engine, and Stage 1 tunes on the 204bhp version are well documented — tuners such as Celtic Tuning advertise up to 30% power gains, which is achievable from this engine. But an economy-focused map is calibrated differently, with part-throttle efficiency as the priority rather than peak output.

In practice, the economy gains from a remap come from two places. First, you need less throttle at normal road speeds because the torque curve is fuller lower in the rev range. Second, the engine burns fuel more efficiently at cruise, which compounds over every mile. Real-world improvements in mixed driving are typically in the 5–10% range, and more if regen frequency drops significantly because combustion is cleaner.

Tell any tuner your brief is economy, not power. Not all remaps are calibrated the same way, and a power-chasing tune won’t help your mpg figures — it may even hurt them.

EGR delete: worth including alongside the remap

The EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve routes exhaust gas back into the intake to lower combustion temperatures. The trade-off is carbon buildup in the intake manifold over time, and on higher-mileage OM648 engines that buildup can be substantial. A coked intake reduces combustion efficiency — exactly the opposite of what you want if you’re chasing economy.

A software EGR delete tells the ECU to hold the valve closed. The valve stays physically in the car; it’s a calibration change, not a hardware removal. It sits in a legal grey area, but unlike DPF deletion it isn’t checked visually at MOT. Many tuners include it as standard with any diesel remap on this generation of engine.

If the car has covered significant miles, consider having the EGR valve and intake ports cleaned before the remap session. A mechanically stuck-open valve will keep recirculating exhaust gas regardless of what the ECU is told to do.

Getting the car ready before the remap

The state of the DPF at the point of remapping matters. If it’s already heavily loaded, the car can run worse after the tune, not better — increased fuelling and boost pushing through a near-blocked filter is not a good combination. A forced regeneration via diagnostic tool before the session sorts this. Have the tuner do it as part of the booking, or get a decent independent to run one beforehand.

Also worth attending to: injectors, glow plugs, air filter, and turbo condition. A remap exposes any weakness in the fuelling system. The OM648 is a solid engine, but these cars aren’t young, and a tired injector that was masking its symptoms at stock power will make itself known once the calibration changes.

Pick a tuner with direct experience of the OM648 and its Bosch EDC ECU variants. Ask specifically whether they adjust DPF regeneration thresholds as part of the calibration — some do, some don’t, and for an economy-first brief it matters which camp your tuner sits in.
