Migrating an EcuTek Tune from a 2008 STI to a 2010 STI: What Actually Happens

Short answer: not a direct copy, but not starting from zero either

When you move an EcuTek tune between cars — even the same model range — you cannot take the .rom file from the 2008 and flash it straight into the 2010’s ECU. EcuTek’s ProECU software only allows a ROM to be programmed into the ECU type it originally came from. The 2008 and 2010 STI share the same generation (GR chassis, EJ257, dual AVCS W25 heads), but their ECUs carry different ROM version IDs. The software will reject a mismatched flash before it even starts.

What your tuner actually does is open the 2010’s stock base ROM and transfer your calibration changes — fuel maps, ignition timing, boost targets, AVCS tables — into that new base. It is a migration of calibration data, not a file copy. If they still have your 2008 tune on file, this is considerably faster than building from scratch.

How EcuTek ROM locking works

EcuTek uses a system called ROM keying, which binds the tune file to the tuner’s hardware dongle. Only the shop that created the tune — or one they specifically authorize — can open and re-flash it. A VIN lock can also be applied on top of that, tying the ROM to the original car’s chassis number. If your 2008 tune has a VIN lock, it cannot be used on the 2010 at all without the original tuner’s involvement.

Most shops will handle this for a reduced fee compared to a full custom tune, since they are not starting blind. Call ahead and ask them to pull your file before the appointment — it saves time on the day.

What actually changed between 2008 and 2010

Less than you might think, but enough to matter for ROM compatibility. Both years use the EJ257 with dual AVCS on the W25 heads, introduced for the 2008 model year — that is a meaningful shared foundation. Your tuner will not need to rethink the whole strategy.

Two differences are worth knowing. Subaru added a nitride surface treatment to the crankshaft starting in the 2009 model year. That is a durability change, not a calibration one. The ECU maps also received minor refinements between 2008 and 2010, particularly in the exhaust AVCS tables, which is part of why the stock base ROMs carry different version IDs even within the same generation. Neither requires a fundamentally different approach to tuning — but they do mean the ROM files are not interchangeable.

What to cover with your tuner before the appointment

  • Ask them to locate your 2008 tune file in their system before you bring the 2010 in.
  • Find out if the existing tune is VIN-locked. If it is, they will need to rebuild it for the new car rather than transfer it.
  • Confirm whether the 2010 will have the same hardware — turbo, injectors, intercooler, exhaust. Any difference means the calibration needs active adjustment, not just porting.
  • Ask about licensing. Each physical ECU typically requires its own EcuTek license, so budget for that separately from the tuner’s time.

Will the 2010 need a full retune or just a re-flash?

If the modification list is identical on both cars, a competent tuner should be able to migrate the calibration and do a short verification pull on the dyno rather than a full session. Think of it as a confirmation run, not a ground-up build.

Change the turbo, injectors, or anything that meaningfully alters airflow or fuel delivery, and you are looking at a proper retune. The 2008 calibration is still a useful reference — boost targets, AVCS strategy, ignition curve — but fuel and ignition tables will need live correction for different hardware. That is time on the dyno, not just a file transfer.
