Mercedes S211 E320 CDI OM648 DPF Delete and Economy Remap: What You Need to Know
Why the OM648 DPF hurts fuel economy more than you might expect
The Mercedes OM648 — the 3.2-litre straight-six CDI used in the W211 and S211 E320 — was not originally designed around a particulate filter. DPF fitment on these cars was an option, which means the regeneration strategy was grafted on rather than engineered in from the start. That matters, because it makes the regen cycles less efficient and on mixed or urban driving more frequent.
Every active regen burns additional diesel to raise exhaust temperatures high enough to incinerate accumulated soot. On a car doing a lot of shorter journeys, this happens regularly — and it shows up as a persistent dip in real-world mpg. Many owners also notice the car feeling slightly flat during regen: the ECU is pulling back fuelling to manage temperatures.
This is the core reason a DPF delete tends to improve economy on these. You are not so much gaining efficiency as stopping an active drain.
The physical delete: what is actually involved
The DPF on the S211 OM648 sits in the exhaust downstream of the catalytic converter. The two common approaches are gutting the existing canister — clearing the filter substrate while keeping the outer shell — or replacing that section of pipe entirely with a straight-pipe or a de-catted equivalent.
Keeping the outer shell makes things tidier on a visual check, depending on your jurisdiction. Either way, the physical work on these is relatively uncomplicated compared with later models where the filter is integrated tightly into the exhaust manifold area.
The far more important half of the job is the ECU remap.
ECU remap: economy brief vs power brief
This is where most OM648 owners leave real gains on the table. Most tuners, when presented with a diesel for a remap alongside a DPF delete, default to a power-oriented map. The fuelling tables, boost targets, and injection timing all move in the direction of more torque — which tends to increase consumption.
An economy-focused remap does the opposite. It adjusts injection timing for thermal efficiency rather than peak torque, softens the boost curve for light-load cruising, and optimises fuelling for the steady-speed driving where diesel economy is strongest.
Critically, the remap also needs to disable the DPF regeneration routines entirely. If these remain active after a physical delete, the software will still periodically inject extra post-combustion fuel trying to trigger a regen that can never complete. That wrecks economy and risks oil dilution as diesel washes down the cylinder walls. Make sure your tuner disables the regen routines in the ECU file — not just the warning lamp on the dash.
EGR delete: worth pairing with the DPF work?
The OM648 EGR valve is prone to causing problems on higher-mileage cars. Carbon buildup in the inlet manifold is common, and a sticky or failed EGR can cause rough running, idle surge, and black smoke on acceleration. Many owners delete the EGR at the same time as the DPF, since the car is already being remapped and both deletions are handled together in the ECU file.
The economy gains from an EGR delete alone are modest. But it cleans up combustion and prevents future intake problems. If your EGR is still healthy and the mileage is low, it is less urgent. On a high-mileage OM648 that is already in for DPF work, it makes sense to address it while you are there.
What realistic economy gains look like
It varies. A car suffering frequent regen cycles on urban or mixed driving can see a meaningful improvement. A car already spending most of its miles at motorway speeds — where regen is more efficient and less frequent — will see less dramatic change.
The OM648 in standard form is capable of genuine long-run economy at a motorway cruise. A well-executed economy remap builds on that base without chasing peak power numbers. The difference between a power map and an economy map on these engines is real; it is not just a tick-box on the tuner’s order form.
The legal position
DPF removal is illegal for road use in the UK, across the EU, and in many other jurisdictions. In the UK, regulations introduced in 2014 require MoT testers to check for the physical presence of a DPF on any vehicle originally fitted with one. A car with a removed or gutted filter should fail that inspection. Operating a non-compliant vehicle on public roads also risks invalidating your insurance.
This is a decision only you can make. Some owners run these cars on private land or for track use only. Others accept the risk. But go in clear-eyed — the legal exposure is genuine and worth understanding before you commit.
