Alumalite vs AlumaCorr: What Racers Need to Know Before Ordering Splitter Material
Two products, one confusing naming convention
If you’ve walked out of a sign shop with the wrong composite panel, you’re not alone. Alumalite and AlumaCorr are both aluminum-faced composite panels with corrugated plastic cores, sold at the same suppliers, with names that sound like they came from the same company. They didn’t — and the differences actually matter depending on what you’re building.
What Alumalite is
Alumalite is a product of Laminators Inc., a Pennsylvania manufacturer. Standard Alumalite comes in 6mm thickness. Two thin aluminum skins are bonded permanently to a corrugated polypropylene core — the “club sandwich” cross-section you see when you cut one. Despite what floats around on forums, the core is polypropylene, not ABS. The septum running through the corrugations is what gives the sheet its rigidity-to-weight ratio: roughly equivalent in mass to 0.040-inch aluminum sheet, but far stronger in bending.
The aluminum faces are polyester-painted and baked, which is why sign makers use it for outdoor applications. Racers use it for the same reason: no rot, no water absorption, no delamination after a season of mud and rain.
What AlumaCorr is
AlumaCorr is manufactured by NUDO Products. Standard AlumaCorr is 5mm thick — 1mm thinner than Alumalite Standard. The core is a corrugated polyallomer copolymer (CPA), also polypropylene-based. Both faces are aluminum, same concept as Alumalite.
That extra millimeter missing from the core is where most of the practical differences originate. AlumaCorr is lighter — around 15% by most accounts, consistent with the reduced cross-section. It’s also less rigid. The aluminum faces aren’t made thicker to compensate, so the sheet deflects more under load. That gap in stiffness is noticeable when a panel spans unsupported distance at speed.

How these differences play out on a race car
Alumalite has been the default for DIY racing aero — flat-bottom undertrays, front splitters, rear diffuser panels — for a long time. It’s stiff, it’s cheap relative to carbon, and sign shops cut it all day. You can get a 4×8 sheet and build a lot of car from it.
AlumaCorr handles most of the same jobs fine. The weight saving is real, and on a car built to a class weight limit that matters. The rigidity gap becomes a practical problem specifically on unsupported splitters that extend far ahead of the bumper. At speed, AlumaCorr without support rods can visibly deflect downward — which is bad both aerodynamically and structurally. Add a pair of support rods and the problem goes away.
Dent resistance is the other meaningful difference. An undertray that regularly clips curbs or drops over aggressive rumble strips will show the difference sooner on AlumaCorr. Alumalite isn’t indestructible, but it shrugs off light strikes that leave a crease in AlumaCorr. For track-day cars where ground clearance is generous and curb strikes are rare, this won’t matter much. For a car that runs aggressive setups at tracks with high kerbs, Alumalite is the better call.
How to make sure you’re getting what you ordered
Sign shops routinely use “aluminum composite panel” as a catch-all, and staff may not distinguish between Laminators and NUDO stock. Before anything gets cut, ask the shop to confirm the manufacturer name — Laminators Inc. for Alumalite, NUDO Products for AlumaCorr. The product data sheet or box labeling will settle it. NUDO’s AlumaCorr SKUs at distributors like Grimco and Professional Plastics are clearly labeled; if you’re ordering online, those are reliable sources.
A quick caliper check on an uncut corner of the sheet before you pay is also a reliable filter: 6mm is Alumalite Standard, 5mm is AlumaCorr. Simple and takes ten seconds.
Both products accept vinyl wrap, screen printing, and direct digital print on the aluminum face without additional prep — so for graphics-only sign work the distinction rarely surfaces. It’s when the material gets used structurally, as motorsport builders tend to use it, that knowing which one you have actually matters.
