CageKits vs TrackSpec: What Actually Matters When Choosing a Roll Cage for 24 Hours of Lemons

The kit brand is only half the story

If you’re weighing CageKits against TrackSpec for a Lemons build, both are legitimate options with real race use behind them. But after looking at how many cages actually fail tech — and why — the brand decision turns out to matter less than you’d expect. The welder matters more.

A roll cage is only as strong as its worst joint. Lemons tech inspectors have seen enough sloppy installs to know exactly where to look: the cage feet, door bar gussets, anywhere a tube meets another tube. A precision-bent kit with inconsistent welds is a safety problem. A solid install of a well-designed kit is not. Keep that in mind while reading everything below.

What the Lemons rulebook actually requires

Before picking a kit, confirm it can meet the structural minimums in the Lemons safety checklist. The core requirements:

  • A full front and rear hoop, braced to each other along the roofline (halo and side/downbar configurations are both acceptable)
  • Dual door bars on each side — X-pattern counts
  • At least two main-hoop backstays with no bends, angled as close to 45 degrees from horizontal as practical
  • At least one main-hoop diagonal
  • Spreader plates and gussets at appropriate joints
  • Complete 360-degree welds at every joint, including all cage-to-chassis attachment points
  • Every load-bearing member formed from a single continuous tube — no splices allowed

Tubing minimum depends on your car’s weight as raced. Under 3,000 lbs: 1.50″ x .120″ wall or 1.75″ x .095″ wall. Over 3,000 lbs: 1.75″ x .120″ wall. Weigh the car after safety gear, fuel cell, and fire system are installed — a lot of builds creep above 3,000 lbs without the builder realizing it, and ordering the lighter-wall kit is a common and expensive mistake.

One more requirement that surprises people: every driver’s helmeted head must sit at least two inches inside the cage structure. If your team runs tall drivers, check clearance before committing to a cage geometry.

CageKits

CageKits uses 3D scanning to engineer model-specific cages, with tubes that are laser-notched and CNC-bent to match the scan data. The practical advantage is fit precision right out of the box — joints come pre-notched, which means tighter fit-up and cleaner welds compared to raw tube that needs hand-notching.

Feedback from Lemons builders has generally been positive. The complaints that do surface are usually about the ordering process rather than the product — people who didn’t confirm measurements or missed a step in the spec sheet. TrackSpec Motorsports

TrackSpec grew directly out of the SPEC Corvette race series, where they kept seeing poorly designed cage installs and decided to build better kits. Their cages are engineered to meet or exceed SCCA, NASA, and NHRA requirements, and they’ve had real crash exposure in a competitive road racing environment — which gives the safety claims more substance than a company that only tests on paper.

A documented C5 Corvette installation review praised the fitment and driver clearance, and noted the kit had been crash-tested in SPEC Corvette racing. TrackSpec’s installer-friendly approach shows up in how kits are packaged: tubes are labeled, instructions are thorough, and the geometry is pre-worked so fabricators aren’t left guessing at bar placement.

They cover fewer platforms than CageKits. Where they do cover a car, they tend to go deep on the engineering for that specific chassis.

How the two actually compare

Both produce properly engineered, laser-notched kits from competent manufacturers. The real differences are narrower than the marketing suggests:

  • Platform coverage: CageKits covers more cars. TrackSpec goes deeper on the platforms they specialize in, particularly Corvettes and a smaller selection of road-race-popular chassis.
  • Engineering origin: TrackSpec’s design process came from active racing series development. CageKits comes from a precision fabrication and scanning approach. Different roads to the same destination.
  • Community track record: Both have appeared in Lemons builds that passed tech without issue. Neither has a documented reputation for design failures.

If your car is covered by both, the practical tiebreaker is usually platform-specific fit reports from other owners. Search the Lemons forums for your make and model — someone has almost certainly run one of these kits in your car and documented whether it passed tech clean.

The installation question you shouldn’t skip

Whichever kit you choose, nail down who’s doing the welding before you order. Full-penetration welds on cage feet and gusset plates are not the same skill as general fab work. Lemons requires 360-degree welds at every joint — that’s not a complicated standard, but sustaining consistent technique through a long install day is harder than it sounds.

If you’re hiring the work out, ask to see previous cage builds. Photos of finished feet and door bar connections tell you a lot. If you’re doing it yourself and have solid welding experience, the pre-notched kits from either company make the job considerably easier than starting from raw tube.

Don’t skip the spreader plates at the cage feet. That’s one of the most common tech-fail points — inspectors look there first. And if you’re uncertain about any part of the build, Lemons has a safety checklist on their site that’s worth reading in full before you strike an arc.

One last practical note: try to get tech eyes on the cage before the event, not at it. Many regions allow pre-event tech checks, and showing up with an unresolved issue means you don’t race that weekend.
