Honda EK Engine Bay Prep: How to Strip, Prime, and Paint It Right
Bay prep is where EK builds live or die
A lot of people pour money into motors and suspension and then do a half-effort job on the bay. It shows. The engine bay is the first thing anyone sees when they pop the hood, and on an EK it’s especially visible thanks to the relatively open layout. The process isn’t complicated — but it is methodical, and each step depends on the one before it being done right.
Pull the motor before anything else
Working around an engine in the bay is a trap. Overspray gets everywhere you don’t want it, and you can’t properly prep the firewall or inner fender corners with the motor sitting in there. Pull it first. With the bay empty you’ll also find all the small things you didn’t know needed attention — ground straps with crusty connectors, grommets that have shrunk and cracked, weld seams that were never sealed from the factory.
Removing the sound deadening
The black tar-based sound deadening Honda applied to the firewall and floor sections of the bay has to come out if you want a clean paint job. There are three main approaches, and they’re not equally good.
- Dry ice or CO2: Makes the material brittle so it fractures and chips off in large pieces rather than smearing. Fast and relatively clean. This is the preferred method for a full bay job.
- Heat gun: Softens the tar enough to scrape, but it can get sticky and messy and the smell is unpleasant. Works in a pinch.
- Chemical stripper: Effective on stubborn adhesive residue, but requires thorough neutralization and drying before any primer goes on. Better used as a follow-up than a primary method.
Whatever you use, the adhesive residue has to be completely gone before primer. Anything left under the paint will telegraph through and cause adhesion failure down the road. Wipe down with wax and grease remover after the deadening is out, and wipe again after any grinding work.
Firewall cleanup and stud removal
The EK firewall comes from the factory loaded with brackets, clips, and threaded studs for wiring harnesses and factory hardware that won’t be in a stripped build. Grinding these flush is part of the process. Start with a grinding disc to get close, then follow up with a flap disc to smooth everything level. Any pinholes or low spots from grinding should be skim-welded or filled with body filler before primer — high-build primer isn’t a substitute for proper metalwork. It’s filler, not gap bridge.
Check seams too. Factory seam sealer is often incomplete or has cracked with age. Bare seams left open are where rust starts. Apply new seam sealer to any exposed joints and tool it smooth before the metal prep stage.
Metal prep and etching primer
Bare metal starts rusting faster than most people expect, especially in humid climates. Once grinding is done and the bay is clean, your first coat needs to be an etching primer or self-etching primer — not regular primer. Etching primer chemically bonds to bare metal through a mild acid reaction. Regular primer relies on mechanical adhesion to a prepared surface. Skip the etch coat and you’re rolling the dice on long-term adhesion.
Apply the etching primer the same day as the metalwork if you can. Don’t leave bare metal sitting overnight.
High-build primer and wet sanding
Most bay jobs take two to three coats of high-build primer. Between coats, wet sanding cuts down the surface, fills minor scratches from prep work, and creates a uniform adhesion surface for the next coat. This is where the final quality of the paint job is actually determined — not during the color coat.
Cure time is the detail people most often get wrong. Fresh primer feels dry to the touch well before it’s cured internally. Wet sanding too early — especially in a cold or unheated garage — loads the paper almost immediately, tears edges, and creates uneven low spots that won’t sand flat. In a heated shop, overnight is usually enough between coats. In a cool space, go longer. When in doubt, wait.
Use 400-grit for sanding between primer coats. For the final pass before color, work down to 600-grit or finer. Sand until the surface is uniformly dull with no shiny patches — that flat, even surface is what the color coat needs to stick to and lay flat over.
Block sand whenever the geometry allows it. A sanding block keeps pressure even across the surface and prevents finger-tip low spots that show up under paint at the wrong angle of light.
VSM and color choice for the bay
Valencia Silver Metallic is one of the most consistently popular choices for EK builds. It’s a factory Honda color, so it reads as period-correct on the car without being overdone, and it photographs well. Other common approaches are engine bay black (flat or semi-gloss for a more functional look), matched body color for a clean unified build, or white as a high-contrast backdrop for colored dress-up hardware.
For a metallic like VSM in the bay, technique matters more than it would for a solid color. Maintain consistent spray distance and gun speed — metallics are sensitive to both, and inconsistent passes cause the flake to orient differently and appear as blotchy or mottled areas in the final clear. Apply color in light, even coats and let each flash off fully before the next pass.
Clear coat the bay. It makes cleaning easier and protects the color from the heat and chemical exposure a bay gets. Two coats of clear, wet-sanded lightly between them with 800 or 1000 grit, will hold up far longer than bare color.
Small things that matter
Mask off all the firewall grommets before paint. Paint that gets into the grommet channel means the grommet won’t seat flush when the harness goes back through, and you’ll end up cutting paint to fix it. Worth the five minutes to mask them properly upfront.
Also: when reassembling, don’t use the bay as a work surface. One scratch from a ratchet or a dropped bolt head and you’re touching up primer and respraying. Put cardboard down.
