Drifting a Honda NSX Is Harder Than It Looks

The Honda NSX NA1 was engineered to feel neutral, approachable, and balanced right up to its limit. That’s exactly what makes it a nightmare to drift. A car designed to resist snap oversteer and self-correct is fighting you every time you try to break traction deliberately and hold it there.

The Mid-Engine Problem

Front-engine RWD cars like the Nissan Silvia work well for drifting partly because of a pendulum effect — the heavy end is out front, and once the rear starts rotating, there’s momentum working in your favour. The rear swings out and keeps swinging in a way that gives you time to react and modulate.

Mid-engine layouts concentrate mass around the centre of the car. That sounds like it should be good — and for circuit work, it is. But it means less rotational inertia once the rear steps out. The swing happens faster, and the window for catching it is narrower. At low speed, that window becomes almost non-existent. The car snaps from grip to full spin with very little warning.

This is why the NSX tends to behave better at higher entry speeds — there’s enough momentum to keep the rear loaded and sweeping progressively. Strip that away on a slow skidpad circle and you’re fighting the physics of the layout on the worst possible terms.

Steering Angle and Ratio

The NA1’s steering geometry was never designed with sustained oversteer in mind. Maximum steering angle is limited compared to purpose-built drift cars, and when you’re holding a slide you’re essentially on or near the steering lock the entire time. You can’t dial in more angle when the car starts to tighten — you’re already at the limit of what the rack will give you.

The steering ratio is also slow. Spec figures sit around 18:1 or above depending on the variant, with roughly three turns lock-to-lock. On a fast road or circuit that feels deliberate and precise. When you’re catching a sideways NSX at low speed and need to wind on full counter-steer quickly, it means a lot of arm movement. It gets tiring fast.

No Power Steering — By Design

Honda deleted power assistance from the NA1 deliberately. Ayrton Senna was involved in development testing, and direct rack feel was prioritised over driver comfort. On the road or on circuit, that’s a genuinely great decision — the feedback through the wheel is exceptional. For drifting, especially repeated runs with constant lock-to-lock inputs, the physical effort compounds quickly. Arm fatigue shows up much sooner than you’d expect.

Some owners fit a Quaife quick-ratio rack or adapt a rack from another Honda to shorten lock-to-lock and cut the effort needed to catch slides. It’s a common modification among anyone who wants to drift one regularly rather than just prove a point once.

Second Gear Is the Wrong Gear

The NSX 5-speed has a significant gap between first and second gear. Second is tall enough that at the relatively low speeds a drift circle involves, the engine can’t generate enough torque to keep the rear spinning — particularly because the VTEC powerband is less helpful at lower revs. The slide dies, the rear hooks up, and you have to clutch kick to re-initiate. Repeatedly.

Aftermarket close-ratio gearsets exist for the NA1 and tighten the spread between gears considerably. A shorter final drive ratio also helps. Neither is a cheap or simple modification, and for a car most people would drift only occasionally, the investment is hard to justify.

Why the Silvia Is a Completely Different Animal

The Nissan Silvia — whether S13, S14, or S15 — is a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive car built around characteristics that suit drifting almost by accident. Generous steering angle. A torquey inline-four that pulls across a broad rev range. Relatively light nose. Weight distribution that produces predictable, manageable oversteer rather than the knife-edge snap the NSX is prone to.

These cars have dominated club and professional drifting for decades because they’re compliant tools — they do what you want, when you want, without demanding perfection on every input. Comparing the experience to an NSX isn’t a fair fight.

Entry Speed Is the NSX’s One Real Advantage

With a proper entry speed the NSX can actually flow into a slide in a way that feels surprisingly natural. The mid-engine layout that snaps viciously at low speed becomes less violent when there’s enough inertia to keep the rear rotating progressively. The car still demands more precision than a Silvia, but it stops feeling completely unruly.

The lesson from anyone who has drifted a mid-engine car is always the same: commit on entry. A hesitant, low-speed approach is where the layout punishes you most. Take that cone circle with less speed than it needs and the car will keep reminding you.
