The 370Z Roadster Latch Warning Isn’t One Problem — It’s Eight
When a 370Z Roadster throws a convertible top latch warning, the soft top control unit is listening to a network of position sensors spread across the whole system. Around eight micro switches cover the 5th bow area, the storage lid motors, and the latch mechanism itself — and any one of them can trigger the same warning light and chime. Before you do anything else, the job is working out which one.
How the Soft Top Control Unit Reads Position
The soft top control unit is the brain. It reads sensor inputs at every critical point of the top’s travel and compares them against expected states for each stage of the cycle. A single signal that’s wrong — or simply absent — stops the operation and raises the warning.
Two types of sensors live in the system. Micro switches are simple mechanical contacts that open or close when linkage reaches the right position. The roof status sensors are hall-effect devices inside the hydraulic cylinders that read piston position by detecting changes in a magnetic field. They fail in different ways, which matters when you’re trying to track one down.
What the Car Is Actually Monitoring

- Roof drive cylinder extended and retracted positions
The switches that cover the 5th bow sit just behind the headrest area on the driver’s side — you can see them by lifting the 5th bow all the way open. Storage lid switches sit near the lid motors. The front latch, when it hooks onto the windshield header striker, triggers additional switches inside the storage lid area.
Diagnosing the Latch Warning
The fastest route is a scan tool that can talk to the soft top control unit directly. A generic OBD-II reader won’t cut it — you need body module access. Nissan’s CONSULT-III can monitor individual sensor inputs in real time and show exactly which switch is out of range. A capable Autel or Launch scanner with Nissan-specific coverage will usually get you the same data.
Without a scanner, watch the top cycle and mark where the motor cuts out or hesitates. The unit will try to reach the next position, fail to get confirmation from the sensor, and kill power. That hesitation points directly at which sensor to inspect.
The Most Common Culprit
The 5th bow latch close sensor is the most frequently reported source of the latch malfunction warning. It detects that the front latch has pulled fully down onto the windshield striker. Over time the contact corrodes or the linkage wears slightly out of alignment, and the switch stops closing cleanly when the latch engages.
Start by cleaning the contact and checking that the linkage actually pushes the switch plunger all the way in. Sometimes that’s the whole fix. If the switch is physically worn, replacement is straightforward — it’s a small part.
What Bypassing the Chime Actually Gets You
The idea of finding the signal wire between the soft top control unit and the warning sound device and cutting it is technically possible. Interrupt that path and the noise stops.
But silencing the chime doesn’t restore full function. When the control unit flags a latch fault, it also disables the trunk lid release button and locks out further top cycling until the fault clears. You’d still have a car that won’t open the trunk from the switch or let you drop the top at a stoplight. You’d also be driving with a system that believes the top isn’t latched. Whether that’s an acceptable trade is a personal call — just go in knowing what you’re trading.
Fixing the sensor itself is almost always the cleaner path. The switches are inexpensive and accessible once you know which one to target.
The Hydraulic Side
If the latch warning accompanies sluggish movement, a mid-cycle stop, or no movement at all, check the hydraulic pump before going further. It lives in the storage well behind the seats and pressurizes automatic transmission fluid to drive the top’s cylinders. Low fluid or a failing pump motor can produce sensor faults simply because the top never fully reaches the position a switch is waiting to confirm.
Pull the reservoir cap and check the level first. Free and fast. If fluid is fine and the pump sounds labored or doesn’t sound at all when the switch is pressed, the motor is worth looking at next.
Troubleshooting Checklist
- Pull body module fault codes with a Nissan-compatible scan tool before touching anything
- Without a scanner, watch the cycle and note where the motor hesitates or cuts out
- Inspect the 5th bow latch close sensor — it fails more often than the others
- Clean contacts and verify linkage alignment before ordering a replacement switch
- Check hydraulic fluid level if the top moves slowly or stops mid-cycle
- Understand that bypassing the chime won’t restore trunk release or top cycling
