Audi MMI 3G+ Black Screen Fix: Diagnosing MOST Bus Open Circuit and Component Protection Lockouts

When the MMI Just Stops

A fully dead MMI 3G+ — no screen, no chime, nothing — on a 2013–2017 Audi A4, A5, A6, or Q5 is genuinely confusing because the symptom looks the same regardless of cause. Fuse looks fine. Optical bypass does nothing. You’re stuck staring at black glass.

The VCDS log almost always points the way. The thread that prompted this post had three fault codes that together explain the whole failure chain.

Fault 00384: MOST Bus Open Circuit

The MMI 3G+ system uses MOST — Media Oriented Systems Transport — a fiber optic ring bus that connects the head unit (J794), DSP amplifier (J525), tuner, and several other modules. Ring topology means one break anywhere in the loop brings down the whole bus.

Fault 00384, “optical data bus: open circuit,” means the CAN gateway (J533) lost the ring. Causes fall into three buckets:

  • A cracked or unseated fiber optic connector — commonly at the trunk-mounted amplifier or at the head unit itself
  • A component that has gone internally open: TV tuners and rear-seat entertainment modules are repeat offenders
  • Damaged fiber cable from bodywork, trim removal, or a connector pulled while the ignition was on

The bypass loop — a short fiber jumper connecting MOST input to output, cutting each device out in turn — is the right first move. If the MMI wakes up when a particular segment is bypassed, that segment is your problem. If it stays dead with the full bypass in place, something else is also wrong.

Fault 02095: Component Protection — the Lockout Most People Miss

This is the one that catches people. Error 02095 on address 5F (the MMI head unit, J794) or address 47 (the DSP amplifier, J525) means those units have locked themselves. Not reduced function. Off.

Component protection is VAG’s anti-theft mechanism. It triggers when a control unit detects it may have been moved — a battery disconnect under certain conditions, a VIN mismatch, or specific coding events can all set it off. Once locked, the unit refuses to operate until the lock is cleared by an authorized process.

In the A5 described in the original thread, both J794 and J525 are showing 02095. Two modules locked at the same time almost always points to a triggering event: a battery swap, a module replacement, or a coding session that went sideways. The timing matters when you’re explaining it to a specialist.

Clearing component protection: what actually works

Standard VCDS will not clear 02095. You need one of the following:

  • ODIS with a live online connection to VAG’s backend. The unlock is processed server-side. A dealer or independent VAG specialist with ODIS online access is the most reliable route.
  • Bench programming from a specialist who can clear CP off the unit directly — variable results, but more useful when the original VIN data is still intact in the module.

The critical point: if 02095 is active on J794, the head unit will not power on regardless of what you do to the fuses, the optical bus, or the wiring. Clear the component protection first, then re-evaluate everything else.

Low Voltage: Not the Main Problem, But Fix It Anyway

Fault 00446 on the rear camera — “operation limitation due to too low voltage” — was logged at 12.1V. A healthy resting battery sits closer to 12.6V. That gap isn’t enough to explain a dead head unit on its own, but a weak battery can trigger component protection events and cause intermittent bus faults over time. Load-test the battery before buttoning the car back up.

A flickering display before total failure is a pattern worth noting. It usually means the system was already marginal — either a failing power supply capacitor inside the head unit, or an intermittent MOST bus connection that eventually went fully open. The flicker is a warning the fault logs don’t always capture in time.

Diagnosis Order That Actually Saves Time

Working these in the right sequence matters. Chasing the optical bus when component protection is the real problem wastes hours.

  1. Load-test the battery. A voltage reading alone is not enough — a battery that reads 12.4V open-circuit can still collapse under load.
  2. Check addresses 5F and 47 in VCDS for fault 02095. If either is present, book an ODIS online session before touching anything else.
  3. With CP cleared, if the MMI still won’t start, work the MOST bus systematically — fiber bypass jumper, segment by segment, starting at the trunk amplifier since that connector sees the most movement.
  4. Probe the fuses with a meter rather than relying on visual inspection. High-resistance fuse failures look fine to the eye.
  5. Verify both the permanent (terminal 30) and switched (terminal 15) feeds to the head unit, and check the MMI power supply relay. A dead relay produces the same symptom as a dead head unit.

If component protection clears, the MOST bus checks out clean, and the unit still won’t come on, the head unit itself likely needs bench repair. Bad capacitors on the power board are a documented failure mode on older MMI 3G+ units, and several VAG electronics specialists offer board-level repair for 8R1 035 746 and similar part numbers at a fraction of replacement cost.
