A handful of standards cover the vast majority of vehicles on the road, but they don’t overlap — and mixing them up means a sensor that won’t seat, or worse, one that threads in partway and strips the housing. Here’s the quick reference.
Coolant temperature sensor thread sizes
Two sizes handle most of what you’ll encounter:
- M12 x 1.5 — standard on all GM LS and LT series engines (Gen III, IV, and V), and common across a wide range of European and Japanese OEMs. Modern GM V8? Almost certainly M12 x 1.5.
- 1/8-27 NPT — the dominant aftermarket standard. Virtually every standalone gauge sender, aftermarket ECU sensor, and performance coolant temp sensor defaults to this. Also factory spec on many older American engines.
Beyond those two, you’ll run into a few others depending on platform:
- 1/4-18 NPT — shows up on older GM trucks, some Ford applications, and a lot of American iron from the 1960s through the 1990s.
- M18 x 1.5 — Honda’s choice for coolant temp sensors and fan switches across D-series, B-series, and K-series engines.
- 3/8 NPT — less common for temp sensors specifically, but present on some older Ford and Chrysler platforms, and occasionally used in racing gauge setups.

Thermostat housing plug thread sizes
Blank plugs in thermostat housings — the ones sealing off unused ports or vent holes — generally match whatever sensor thread the housing was designed for. On LS-platform aluminum housings, that’s typically M12 x 1.5. On older cast iron housings, 1/8-27 NPT is the usual suspect.
Aftermarket and swap-specific housings are a different story. A single aluminum casting might have a 1/8 NPT vent port alongside a 3/8 NPT gauge port and an M14 x 1.5 sensor hole, all on the same piece. Don’t assume — measure.
How to identify your thread without guessing
A thread pitch gauge takes about 30 seconds and costs almost nothing. If you don’t have one, try threading in a known fitting by hand. Metric and NPT have different pitch angles, so if it doesn’t engage cleanly within the first couple of turns, it’s the wrong standard — you’ll know before any damage is done.
NPT threads are tapered. A 1/8 NPT fitting will start threading into a 1/4 NPT port for a turn or two before binding. That’s not a size match. That’s just the taper.
Adapters and conversions
M12 x 1.5 to 1/8 NPT adapters are the most commonly needed conversion — particularly for LS swaps where you want to run a standard aftermarket gauge sender in the factory sensor port. ICT Billet, GlowShift, and AutoMeter all make them. Simple threaded fittings, no drilling, no tapping required.
When installing any sensor or plug into an aluminum housing, skip the PTFE tape on NPT threads. Tape can shred and contaminate the cooling system. A small dab of liquid thread sealant is the right call — it sets and stays put.
