O2 Sensor Not Ready on a New Car: The GM Drive Cycle Fix for California Registration
The O2 sensor monitor showing “not ready” doesn’t mean the sensor is broken
On a brand-new car with fewer than 400 miles, it’s one of the most normal things you’ll see. OBD-II readiness monitors are self-tests the ECU runs under specific driving conditions. On a fresh car, many of those conditions just haven’t happened yet.
The oxygen sensor monitor in particular is one of the pickier non-continuous monitors. It won’t complete during a quick trip to the grocery store. It needs a genuine cold start and a specific mix of idle time, steady-state highway cruising, and deceleration before the ECU marks it done.
What the oxygen sensor monitor actually tests
The O2 monitor is really two tests in one. The first checks the sensor’s heater circuit — O2 sensors need to reach roughly 600°F before they give accurate readings, and the heater gets them there faster than exhaust heat alone. The second checks the sensor’s actual response: how quickly it switches between rich and lean signals, and how the upstream (pre-cat) and downstream (post-cat) sensors compare.
Both halves have to complete before the monitor shows “ready.” Miss one condition and the whole test stays incomplete.
Why new cars so often have incomplete monitors
A few things reset all OBD monitors back to incomplete: disconnecting the battery, a PCM reflash, or clearing codes with a scan tool. All of those happen routinely during factory build, dealer prep, and shipping. The car rolls off the lot with a clean set of monitors and needs real driving to build them back up.
340 miles of mostly local driving rarely provides the exact sequence of conditions every monitor needs. The EVAP monitor wants fuel between a quarter and three-quarters full. The catalyst monitor needs sustained highway speed. The O2 monitor needs a true cold start — meaning the engine has fully cooled overnight, not just sat for an hour after your last drive.
The GM drive cycle for the oxygen sensor monitor
GM publishes a specific drive cycle procedure to set OBD readiness monitors. Here’s the sequence that targets the O2 sensor monitor:
- Cold start. Engine coolant below 50°C (122°F) and within about 6°C of outside air temperature. Park it overnight. Do not turn the key to ON before cranking — leaving the key on before you start can prevent the O2 heater diagnostic from running.
- Idle — 2.5 minutes. After starting, idle with the A/C on and the rear defroster running. The electrical load is part of the test. This phase checks the O2 heater circuit and verifies the engine enters closed-loop fuel control.
- Accelerate to 55 mph. Turn off the A/C and defroster, then apply about half throttle until you reach 55 mph.
- Hold 55 mph for 3 minutes. This is where the O2 sensor response test actually runs. Keep it steady.
- Decelerate naturally. Lift off the throttle and coast down to around 20 mph without braking if traffic allows.
- Second cruise — 5 minutes at 55–60 mph. Accelerate back up and hold that speed for five minutes. This sets several other monitors alongside the O2 monitor.
- Full stop. Decelerate smoothly to a complete stop.
One run through this is usually enough. If the monitor still shows incomplete afterward, scan for stored or pending trouble codes first — an active fault code can block monitors from running entirely.
California registration and the eight-year exemption
Worth knowing specifically for California owners: the state exempts vehicles from its biennial smog check for the first eight model years. A 2024 model year vehicle would not need a smog check for registration renewal until 2032.
The renewal exemption is straightforward. Initial registration in California — for a vehicle purchased from an out-of-state dealer, for example — may carry different requirements. The California Bureau of Automotive Repair is the right place to confirm what’s actually needed before booking a smog check.
One recent rule change that matters here: as of October 2025, the BAR tightened California’s OBD monitor rules. All readiness monitors now have to be set to pass a smog inspection. Previously, the EVAP monitor was the one exception allowed to stay incomplete. If the C8 ever needs a California smog check, every monitor will need to show complete.
If the monitor still won’t set after the drive cycle
A persistent “not ready” after multiple correct drive cycles points to an actual fault, not a missed step. Pull stored and pending codes with an OBD scanner. A P0135 (O2 sensor heater circuit) or P0136 (circuit malfunction) alongside the incomplete monitor is a different situation than an incomplete monitor with zero codes.
GM dealers can run a readiness check with their GDS2 diagnostic tool, which shows exactly which monitors are pending and what specific conditions they’re still waiting for. If a registration deadline is close, that’s the fastest way to see what’s actually left.
