Toyota Celica ST205 Shock Absorbers: Super Strut, Cartridge Inserts, and What Actually Fits
Is the ST205 Shock an Insert Type?
Short answer: yes and no — and which end of the car you mean changes the whole picture.
The sixth-generation Celica GT-Four (ST205, 1994–1999) uses Toyota’s proprietary Super Strut Suspension at the front and a more conventional independent strut at the rear. These two ends behave very differently when it comes to shock replacement, so treating them the same when sourcing parts is where most people run into trouble.
Understanding Toyota’s Super Strut Front Suspension
Standard MacPherson struts are simple and compact, but they force the damper to handle both lateral loads and vertical damping at the same time. That creates a compromise — the harder the strut resists lateral forces, the more it interferes with smooth damping action. On a performance car with serious cornering demands, that matters.
Toyota’s Super Strut (often called SSS — Super Strut Suspension) separates those jobs. The strut housing is still the main vertical member, but two lower arms — a front “banana arm” and a rear arm joined by rod ends — handle lateral load control independently. The result is significantly better camber retention through the full range of suspension travel, which is why this system ended up on the GT-Four and not the standard Celica variants.
For shock replacement: the damper unit does sit inside the strut housing. So in a cartridge sense, yes, it is insert-style. But the dimensions and mounting geometry of that housing are specific to the Super Strut design. You cannot pull a standard strut insert from a regular Celica — or most other Toyotas of the era — and drop it straight in. The two pinch points in the Super Strut housing are positioned differently, and the oil-filled cartridge used in the SSS is longer than a typical gas-filled MacPherson insert.
Rear Shocks — A Simpler Story
The rear of the ST205 uses a conventional twin-tube independent strut. These are complete shock absorber assemblies rather than cartridge inserts, and part availability is generally better here than at the front. KYB produces specific Excel-G rear units for the ST205 GT-Four, and these are a direct, no-modification replacement. Straightforward job.
Which Other Toyota Models Share Compatible Shocks?
The Super Strut was not exclusive to the ST205. Toyota also fitted it to a handful of other models:
- ST202 Celica — the FWD sibling sold in JDM and some European markets came with an SSS option on higher trim levels. This is the closest relative for sourcing used OEM Super Strut components.
- Carina GTi (European markets) — a number of European-spec Carinas received the Super Strut system, making them another source for used OEM parts if you’re hunting.
- Certain Japanese-market Corollas — some higher-spec domestic Corollas of the same period also ran the Super Strut, though finding those parts in Western markets is harder work.
Outside of those specific models, cross-referencing standard Toyota shock inserts to the ST205 front is not practical. Even parts from closely related T200-platform cars are not a straight swap due to the unique strut housing geometry of the SSS.
Rear Cross-Compatibility
The rear is more forgiving. The ST202 is again the closest match. That said, the GT-Four rear strut spec differs from base Celica units even within the same generation, so cross-check by part number rather than model name alone before ordering anything.
Aftermarket Options
For OEM-quality replacements, KYB is the default in most GT-Four circles. The New SR Special front struts (NST9002R and NST9002L) are widely stocked by JDM-focused suppliers like RHDJapan, and rear Excel-G units are even more accessible. These keep the original Super Strut geometry intact. No modifications required.
For a full coilover conversion, several manufacturers have developed ST205 Super Strut-specific kits — BC Racing (ER Series), Fortune Auto (500 Series), and K-Sport among them. One important caveat: most of these kits require welding modifications to the strut housing. That is not a reversible process, so factor that in before committing.
If the goal is simply to refresh worn dampers without changing the character of the car, OEM-grade KYB front and rear remains the most common recommendation — and the one that leaves the strut housing untouched.
Always Verify by Chassis Number
Not every ST205 is identical. Australian-delivered cars, JDM units, and European-spec models sometimes carry different part numbers for the same component. Give suppliers your full chassis number rather than just “ST205” — it avoids the cost and delay of a wrong-spec return shipment.
