The short answer: it’s close, but the 2025 transmission situation changes the math

For most of the last decade, choosing between a Ford Super Duty with the 6.7L Power Stroke and a Ram Heavy Duty with the 6.7L Cummins came down to preference. Both engines are genuinely capable. Both have loyal followings. The tiebreaker usually fell to dealer experience, brand loyalty, or which truck felt better on a test drive.

2025 altered that slightly. Ram swapped the long-standing transmission behind the Cummins for a ZF 8-speed unit. That’s worth understanding before you sign anything.

The emissions warning every diesel buyer needs to hear first

Modern diesel trucks are not what they were before EPA Tier 3 and 4 regulations rewrote the emissions rulebook. Every new diesel now ships with a full suite of hardware: a diesel particulate filter (DPF), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), selective catalytic reduction (SCR), and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) injection.

The DPF catches soot from combustion. It cleans itself through regeneration: exhaust temps climb to around 900 to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, burning off accumulated particulates. Passive regen happens automatically at sustained highway speeds. Active regen fires off when soot builds up enough that the passive process can’t keep up, injecting extra fuel post-combustion to spike the heat.

Short trips break this system. A 10-minute commute doesn’t give the DPF enough heat or run time to complete a cycle. Soot builds. Eventually the filter clogs and triggers a warning light, limp mode, or a dealer visit. A DPF replacement on a heavy-duty truck typically runs over $2,000.

Both the Power Stroke and the Cummins are equally affected. If your driving profile is mostly short hops, scheduling a 30 to 45 minute highway run at least once a month can let the system complete a cycle. But if every trip is under 20 minutes and you can’t change that, a gas-powered heavy-duty deserves a serious look before you commit.

The engines

Ford 6.7L Power Stroke

Ford’s diesel is a V8 turbo configuration. Standard output is 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. The high-output version, available on higher trim levels, reaches 500 hp and 1,200 lb-ft.

The V8 design delivers a wide power band with strong top-end pull. Sustained towing at highway speed is where it shines. Fuel economy unloaded is a genuine edge over the Cummins; real-world highway figures in the low-to-mid 20s MPG are achievable on a good run.

Ram 6.7L Cummins

The Cummins is an inline-6, which is a simpler engine architecture with fewer moving parts and inherent rotational balance. The 2025 version produces 430 horsepower and 1,075 lb-ft of torque. Highway fuel economy unloaded tends to run a few MPG below the Power Stroke, but under heavy towing loads the gap often narrows or flips in the Cummins’ favor.

The inline-6 design has an enormous aftermarket following and decades of documented high-mileage performance. Trucks with 300,000 to 400,000 miles on an original Cummins are common enough to not be remarkable. That reputation is earned.

Transmissions: the real story for 2025

Ford’s 10R140 10-speed transmission has had a rough few years of public documentation. Ford issued at least three technical service bulletins addressing the unit: TSB 23-2123 in April 2023 for erratic shifting, TSB 24-2101 in March 2024 for broader internal failures, and TSB 24-2254 in August 2024 targeting bushing and Teflon seal failures in the CDF drum assembly. Most were covered under warranty, and later-production trucks appear improved. But the track record exists, and some owners pursued lemon law claims.

On the Ram side, the transmission situation had its own long history of problems. The 68RFE automatic gearbox sat behind nearly every standard-output Cummins from the 2007.5 model year through 2024. It is widely documented as the weakest part of the Ram HD drivetrain, particularly under heavy-load towing where sustained high torque and heat take a toll. Countless 68RFE rebuild threads exist across Ram forums for a reason.

For 2025, Ram replaced the 68RFE with a ZF 8-speed, branded the PowerLine ZF8. ZF builds transmissions for heavy European commercial vehicles, and their 8HP series is one of the more respected automatic gearbox designs in current production. Early first-drive reviews from outlets including The Drive and Diesel Army describe smooth, responsive shifts with a firm feel under load. No major field failures have surfaced in early ownership reports, though the units haven’t accumulated enough real-world miles to call it fully proven.

Replacing a known-weak gearbox with purpose-built ZF hardware is a significant change. If it holds up as expected, it addresses what was historically the single biggest mechanical vulnerability in the Cummins package.

Reliability and long-term ownership costs

The Cummins engine has the longer proven track record for extreme-mileage durability. That’s not brand loyalty talking; it reflects decades of documented use across commercial and personal applications. The Power Stroke is a capable engine that has improved considerably over its generations, but it hasn’t accumulated the same kind of 400,000-mile field record in everyday private ownership.

Routine maintenance costs are similar between the two. EGR cooler failures, turbo issues, and DPF replacements can show up on both platforms. The 6.7 Power Stroke’s EGR cooler was prone to failure in earlier generations; later calibrations reduced the frequency, though it remains something to watch on pre-2017 examples.

The ZF transmission still needs real field time. Early indications are good. But the 68RFE also launched without a documented failure history and accumulated one over years of use under load. Checking owner forums in 12 to 18 months will tell you more than any first-drive review can.

Which one to buy

For heavy towing as the primary use, with plans to keep the truck long-term, the Cummins makes the stronger case. The engine’s durability history and the new ZF transmission together address the two main concerns buyers have brought to this comparison for years.

For buyers who prioritize fuel economy on long highway miles with only occasional towing, the Power Stroke’s mpg advantage is real and compounds over distance.

If short-trip city driving is your daily reality, revisit the gas option. Both of these diesels were engineered for sustained load and highway use. Using one exclusively for grocery runs is fighting the hardware.
