The G37 RE7R01A: Understanding Complete Drive Loss
A 2013 G37 that barely crawls at full throttle almost always has a hydraulic pressure problem in the transmission — not a linkage issue. If the car reaches three miles an hour at wide-open throttle and refuses to go further, something inside the RE7R01A can no longer build or hold the pressure needed to engage the clutch packs. Confirming the linkage is intact is the right first check, but the problem is further upstream.
The oil change is almost certainly a coincidence. Engine oil and transmission fluid are completely separate systems. You’d have to open the transmission pan itself to disturb the ATF, and a standard oil change doesn’t go anywhere near it. What likely happened is a pre-existing weakness in the transmission finally gave out — and the timing just happened to line up with the maintenance.
Start Here: ATF Level and the No-Dipstick Problem
The RE7R01A in the G37 is a sealed unit with no dipstick. Most owners discover this when they go looking for one. To check the ATF level correctly, the car has to be on a level surface on a lift, and you remove an overflow plug from the bottom of the transmission pan. If fluid drips out, you’re at or above the correct level. If nothing comes out, it’s low. No dipstick means no quick visual confirmation — ever.
A significantly low fluid level can produce exactly the symptoms described: slipping in every gear, inability to move at normal throttle, and very limited forward motion even at wide-open throttle. Confirm the level before anything else. Nissan/Infiniti specifies Matic-S ATF for this transmission. Wrong fluid or low fluid will destroy line pressure fast.
Valve Body and Solenoid Failure
If the fluid level checks out, the valve body is the most common source of severe slipping and near-zero forward drive on the RE7R01A. The valve body controls hydraulic pressure to every clutch pack inside the unit. A failed solenoid or a blocked passage means the transmission can’t generate the pressure required to engage any gear properly.
Three solenoids fail most often in this unit: the line pressure solenoid, the 2346 brake solenoid, and the direct clutch solenoid. Any one of them can drop line pressure enough to make the transmission feel like it has nothing inside. Fault codes P1757 and P1759 show up repeatedly in RE7R01A valve body failures. An OBD-II scan is a useful early step — though the absence of codes doesn’t rule out a solenoid problem.
There is also a documented failure mode specific to the RE7R01A: ATF can contaminate the integrated TCM, which lives inside the valve body assembly. Fluid works its way into the electrical connector area and arcs between the pins, damaging solenoid control circuits. The typical symptom is a sudden, severe loss of drive with no prior warning — which matches this situation closely.
Torque Converter Issues
At 150,000 miles, the torque converter is a real candidate. The RE7R01A uses a system Nissan calls Smooth Lockup Control, which partially engages the converter clutch between shifts to reduce harshness. When the torque converter clutch solenoid fails, or the converter itself wears out, the transmission loses its ability to transfer torque from the engine efficiently.
Torque converter wear typically announces itself with a shudder under light throttle before progressing to slipping, then to near-complete loss of forward motion. If the lockup clutch material has disintegrated, debris can migrate into the valve body and compound the damage. In that scenario, a valve body repair alone won’t be enough.
Fresh ATF on a High-Mileage Transmission
On transmissions with inconsistent service history, old degraded ATF sometimes acts as a makeshift sealant around worn internal seals. Fresh fluid can wash that away and expose the underlying wear. This doesn’t mean the March fluid service caused the failure — but it can accelerate one that was already developing. It’s worth knowing if a shop later tries to pin the blame on the fluid change.
Step-by-Step Diagnosis
- Confirm ATF level on a lift via the overflow plug. It’s the only way to check it on the G37 and it takes five minutes to rule out.
- Scan for transmission fault codes. P1757, P1759, P0720, and the P0730-series all point to specific failed components in the RE7R01A.
- If fluid is correct and codes aren’t conclusive, a line pressure test tells you whether the pump and valve body can produce working hydraulic pressure.
- Low pressure points to the valve body — inspect the integrated TCM section specifically for ATF intrusion and burned connector pins.
- Normal pressure but still no real drive points to the torque converter, which will need to come out for inspection or replacement.
A transmission shop familiar with JATCO units will get you further here than a general mechanic. The RE7R01A is well-documented and parts are available. A valve body rebuild costs significantly less than a full unit replacement if the damage is isolated to that assembly.
