Why ABS, Traction Control, and Parking Brake Lights Come On Together

Three lights, probably one problem

When the ABS light, traction control light, and parking brake light all come on at the same moment, most people assume the worst. Usually it’s simpler than that. Those three warnings often share a single root cause, and the systems behind them overlap more than the dashboard makes it look.

Why the parking brake light is even in the mix

On most vehicles, the warning light labeled “parking brake” is actually doing two jobs. It lights up when the parking brake is engaged — but it also acts as a low brake fluid indicator. The brake fluid reservoir has a float sensor inside it; when fluid drops below the minimum mark, the float closes a circuit and trips that same dashboard light. It has worked this way since the 1970s on most domestic and imported vehicles.

So the light can come on even though nobody touched the handbrake lever. Not a glitch, not crossed wires between unrelated systems — just a shared bulb doing what it was designed to do.

Why ABS and traction control go out together

These two systems share hardware. Both rely on wheel speed sensors — one at each corner of the car — to do their jobs. ABS reads that data to prevent wheel lockup during hard braking. Traction control reads it to detect wheel spin on acceleration. Same sensors, same control module, and often the same fault code when something goes wrong.

When one wheel speed sensor fails or sends an erratic signal, the module loses confidence in its data and deactivates both systems as a precaution. Both warning lights come on. It’s a designed safety default, not a cascade failure spreading through your brakes.

Common causes, in rough order of likelihood

  • Faulty wheel speed sensor — The most common trigger by a wide margin. Sensors sit near the wheel bearing and absorb constant punishment from road grime, salt, and heat. A failing sensor drops out or sends noise instead of a clean signal.
  • Low brake fluid — Worn brake pads push caliper pistons further out, which pulls fluid down from the reservoir even without a leak. A gradual drop can reach the float sensor threshold before the pads look obviously thin.
  • Damaged tone ring (reluctor ring) — The toothed ring the speed sensor reads can corrode or crack, particularly on older vehicles. The sensor itself may be perfectly fine; it just has nothing clean to read.
  • ABS/EBCM module failure — Less common, but the electronic brake control module can fail from water intrusion or heat damage over time. Usually confirmed by a code pointing to the module rather than a specific sensor.
  • Wiring and connector corrosion — Speed sensor wiring runs close to the wheel and flexes constantly. Broken wires or corroded connectors are a frequent find on vehicles that see salt roads every winter.

Check brake fluid first

Before pulling codes or jacking the car up, check the brake fluid reservoir. It sits on top of the master cylinder, usually translucent enough to read the level without removing the cap. Fluid should be between the MIN and MAX lines. If it’s low, top it off with the correct spec — DOT 3, DOT 4, or DOT 5.1, found in your owner’s manual — then take a short drive and see whether the lights clear.

If topping off fixes it temporarily but the level drops again within a few weeks, you have a leak or pads worn to the point of needing replacement. Both need attention regardless.

Scanning for codes — and why a generic OBD-II reader won’t do it

A standard OBD-II code reader only pulls powertrain codes from the engine control module. ABS fault codes live in a separate module, and most inexpensive readers skip it entirely. You need a scanner that explicitly reads ABS or chassis codes. The Foxwell NT630 and Autel AL619 are two well-regarded options that cover ABS without requiring a shop-grade tool. Many auto parts stores — AutoZone and O’Reilly among them — offer free ABS scanning in-store.

The code will usually name the exact sensor or circuit at fault. That turns a frustrating guessing game into a targeted repair.

Is it safe to drive?

Your regular brakes still work. ABS deactivating due to a fault doesn’t remove your braking ability — it removes the anti-lock function. In a panic stop hard enough to lock a wheel, you’ll skid rather than maintaining steering control during braking. Traction control being off means no electronic intervention if a wheel spins on acceleration.

Short trips at normal speeds in dry conditions are generally manageable. Wet roads, ice, or any situation requiring emergency braking is where the absence of ABS becomes a genuine risk. Get it diagnosed before the weather turns.
