Thermostat Housing Plug and Coolant Temp Sensor Thread Pitch Explained

The coolant temperature sensor on most modern engines — LS-series GM motors are the clearest example — uses an M12 x 1.5 metric thread. The thermostat housing drain or bleed plug is usually 1/8-27 NPT. Neither is universal, and they are not interchangeable with each other despite looking superficially similar.

Thermostat housing plug thread sizes

The plug in a thermostat housing is almost always a pipe thread. NPT — National Pipe Tapered — threads seal on their own taper as you tighten them, so no separate gasket is needed.

The most common size across domestic and import housings is 1/8-27 NPT: 1/8-inch nominal pipe size with 27 threads per inch. It’s a small thread — major diameter around 10.3 mm — which is why it strips if overtightened.

Larger housings, especially on V8 trucks and big-block applications, sometimes use 3/8-18 NPT or 1/4-18 NPT. If you’re fitting a custom coolant port for a gauge sender, starting with a 1/8 NPT bung is usually the safest call — the widest selection of aftermarket sensors is threaded for it.

NPT nominal size vs. actual diameter

NPT nominal size does not match the actual thread diameter. A 1/8 NPT plug has a major diameter of about 0.405 inches, not 0.125 inches. Don’t measure the plug with calipers and try to match it to the name — it won’t line up. The nominal size is a pipe-industry convention, not a measurement.

Counting threads to confirm size

Remove the plug and count threads per inch against a ruler, or use a thread pitch gauge. 1/8 NPT runs 27 TPI; 1/4 NPT and 3/8 NPT both run 18 TPI. Since 1/4 and 3/8 NPT share the same TPI, you’ll need calipers to distinguish them by major diameter.

Coolant temperature sensor thread sizes

This is where most of the confusion lives. The OEM CTS in many modern engines is M12 x 1.5 — 12 mm diameter, 1.5 mm pitch. It’s a metric thread, not NPT. The major diameters are close enough that people sometimes try to cross-thread one into the other. That ends with a damaged housing.

Other CTS thread sizes you’ll run into:

  • 3/8-18 NPT — older American V8 applications, Holley EFI housings, some aftermarket intakes
  • 1/4-18 NPT — common GM factory sender thread on pre-LS era engines
  • 1/8-27 NPT — popular for aftermarket gauge senders and third-party sensors

Adapters for M12 to NPT conversions

If your engine has an M12 x 1.5 port and you need to run an aftermarket sender with a 1/8 NPT thread, stainless adapters exist for exactly this. ICT Billet makes one aimed at LS engine swaps. Sealant: NPT vs. metric

NPT threads seal on the taper. Use PTFE tape or a dedicated thread sealant on NPT plugs and sensors. Metric sensors — M12 x 1.5 — seal against the port face with a copper crush washer or an O-ring. Don’t put PTFE tape on a metric sensor. It gives you false torque feedback and risks cracking the housing boss around the port.

Quickest way to confirm which thread you have

Take the old plug or sensor to a hardware store and test it against a thread gauge card. A pitch gauge set costs very little and removes all guesswork. For metric, measure diameter with calipers and confirm pitch. For NPT, count TPI and check for taper — NPT threads narrow slightly along their length, straight threads don’t. If you have an old M12 bolt lying around, try threading it into the suspect port by hand. It’ll either start cleanly or it won’t, and you’ll know in seconds.
