Why the NB Rear Bumper Creates Drag

The second-generation Miata (NB, 1999–2005) rear bumper has a pronounced inward scoop — it looks fine on a street car but on track it acts like a brake. Air gets trapped in that cavity at speed and builds rear drag. It’s not catastrophic, but it’s real, and it’s one of the more accessible things to fix if you’re chasing a cleaner aero balance without bolting on a rear wing.

A lot of track-focused NB owners just yank the bumper cover and run bare. That solves the drag problem but exposes the fuel tank, rear crash structure, and spare tire well — not ideal if the car is street-registered. Sectioning offers a third option: keep the cover for protection and street legality, lose the scoop.

What Bumper Sectioning Actually Is

Sectioning is a coachbuilding technique with roots in 1950s custom work. The core idea is simple: cut a horizontal strip out of the middle of a panel, then bond the two remaining pieces back together. The panel gets shallower — same width, same height, less depth. Customizers used it on steel rooflines decades ago. The same logic applies to ABS plastic bumper covers.

On a curved panel like the NB rear bumper, the cut has to follow the contour consistently or the reattached halves won’t align. That’s where most of the planning effort goes.

Planning the Cut

Pull the bumper off the car and set it face-down on a padded workbench. Decide how much depth you want to remove before touching a blade. Most NB sectioning jobs take out somewhere between 40 and 80 mm — enough to visibly flatten the scoop without making the mounting geometry fight you on reassembly. Mark your cut lines with tape rather than marker. Marker bleeds into plastic and filler. Run two parallel tape strips the same distance apart all the way around the curve — the gap between them is your section.

Check the gap at every point before cutting. A parallel gap stays parallel when the pieces are mated back together. A tapered one means you’ll get a buckle or a gap on one side.

Cutting ABS Plastic

ABS cuts cleanly with a fine-tooth jigsaw blade or an oscillating multi-tool. Slow and steady. The material doesn’t benefit from speed — it benefits from control. A rotary tool with a cutting wheel handles tighter curves near the bumper ends. Keep the blade perpendicular to the face of the bumper throughout, not angled inward or outward, or the mating surfaces won’t sit flush when you bring them together.

Once the strip is out, dry-fit the two halves before committing to any adhesive. They should meet without forcing. If there’s a slight bow at the center, warm the area with a heat gun on a low setting — keep it moving, don’t dwell — and clamp the section flat while the plastic cools and holds its new shape. ABS is cooperative that way.

Bonding the Section: This Is the Part That Matters

Most DIY bumper repairs fail at this step. Filler alone over a bare plastic seam will crack within a season. The cover flexes every time you hit a bump or load the rear of the car; filler doesn’t flex with it. You need a structural bond first, and it needs to be flexible.

On the inside of the bumper, bridge the seam with a backing strip. Cut a strip of ABS sheet — even thick plastic from another scrap bumper works — and bond it across the joint on the inside face using a flexible bumper adhesive designed for the job. Lord Fusor and SEM both make products built for this kind of ABS repair. Apply adhesive to both bonding surfaces, press the strip firmly across the seam, and clamp it. Let it cure completely before moving on. That backing strip carries the flex load so the outer seam doesn’t have to.

On the outside, use a flexible body filler rated for plastic panels. Standard polyester filler over a flex panel will crack at the seam line. Sand the plastic around the joint with 80-grit to give the filler something to grip, then work in thin coats rather than one thick application.

Primer and Paint

Use a flexible primer. Non-negotiable on a bumper cover. Rigid primer over ABS can peel or crack at the repair line within months, especially in temperature extremes. A high-build flexible primer fills any remaining low spots and gives the topcoat a surface it can move with without breaking adhesion.

Block-sand from 180-grit up to 320, then 400 before topcoat. If you’re color-matching the car, NB paint codes are typically on a sticker in the driver’s door jamb opening — take that code (or a paint chip) to a local shop and have them mix a match. Spray in a warm, dust-free environment if at all possible; ABS has a way of showing every particle in the final coat.

The Result

A well-sectioned NB rear bumper sits closer to the body, the profile reads flat, and the car looks more purposeful from behind without looking stripped or unfinished. It’s not a transformation in raw aero numbers — but it cleans up the wake at the rear of the car and eliminates the air-trap effect that makes the stock scoop so frustrating on track. The car can stay street-legal and look intentional rather than half-finished.

The technique transfers to other applications too. The NA rear bumper has its own shape issues, and the same process — careful parallel cuts, flex adhesive, backing strip, flexible filler and primer — applies there as well. Just verify your mounting tab positions relative to the planned cut line before committing to a section depth.
