Clutch Slave Cylinder Bleed Screw Size: 8mm x 1.0 or 8mm x 1.25?
M8 x 1.25 Is Almost Certainly the Right Pick
If you’ve confirmed the diameter is 8mm and you’re now stuck between thread pitches, go with 8mm x 1.25. That’s the standard on the vast majority of clutch slave cylinders — domestic muscle cars, GM F-body and GTO platforms, most Honda applications, Toyotas. The 8mm x 1.0 pitch does exist, but it’s a finer thread that turns up mainly on certain European cars.
Still, before you click Buy, it takes about two minutes to pull your existing bleed screw and verify. Thread pitch gauges are cheap, most auto parts stores have one behind the counter, and they’ll check it for free.
What Thread Pitch Actually Means
On a metric fastener, the number after the x is the pitch — the distance in millimeters between each thread. M8 x 1.25 has threads 1.25mm apart; M8 x 1.0 has threads 1.0mm apart. That’s a meaningful difference. A 1.0 screw will not thread into a 1.25 bore, and vice versa. They look nearly identical sitting on a workbench but they are not interchangeable.
Finer threads (lower pitch number) grip better in soft aluminum and resist loosening under vibration. The tradeoff is they cross-thread more easily, so go slow on installation.
How to Verify Which Pitch Your Car Uses
Three methods, in order of reliability:
- Pull and measure. Remove the stock screw and run it against a thread pitch gauge, or bring it to a hardware store or brake shop. Five minutes tops.
- Thread test. Buy both sizes and try the M8 x 1.25 first. If it threads in smoothly by hand, that’s your size. If it catches or feels wrong, back it out immediately — don’t force it.
- Look it up by platform. For LS1/T56 combinations, members on Grassroots Motorsports and LS1Tech confirm M8 x 1.25 for the internal slave cylinder. Honda S2000 clutch slaves take M8 x 1.25 as well. Audi applications generally follow suit, though a year-specific check is worth doing.
Earl’s Solo-Bleed: Part Numbers for 8mm Applications
Earl’s Solo-Bleed screws replace the stock bleeder nipple with a spring-loaded plunger that opens under pedal pressure and seals automatically when you release. One-person bleeding, no helper at the pedal, no mess.
For 8mm applications:
- 280024ERL — 8mm x 1.25 thread, 23mm long. This is what most people need for clutch and brake applications on GM, Honda, and Toyota vehicles. Classic Industries also lists it as SKU 2208U for GM-specific cross-referencing.
- 8mm x 1.0 Solo-Bleed — available at Summit Racing for European platforms where the finer pitch is specified.
A Different Product for LS/T-56 Swaps
Earl’s also makes a long-style clutch bleeder (LS642001ERL) designed specifically for T-56 transmissions. That one is M10 x 1.5 — a completely different product from the Solo-Bleed line — and converts to a -4AN fitting so you can route a remote bleeder line somewhere actually accessible. It’s the answer when the internal slave’s port is buried after the transmission is bolted in. For a straight screw swap at the slave, the 8mm x 1.25 Solo-Bleed is all you need.
Installation Notes
- Hand-thread first. If it feels like it’s biting at an odd angle, back it out — cross-threading an aluminum bleeder port means a helicoil or a new slave cylinder.
- Torque is light. Around 7–8 Nm is enough. Snug, not cranked down.
- Lubricate threads with fresh brake fluid, not anti-seize. Anti-seize can contaminate hydraulic fluid if it migrates into the bore.
- Test the seal before opening the bleeder. Press the pedal with the Solo-Bleed closed to confirm it seats under pressure before you start the bleed sequence.
