Clutch Slave Cylinder Bleed Screw Size: How to Find the Right Thread Pitch

M8×1.0 or M8×1.25? The Short Answer

The clutch slave cylinder bleed screw on most production cars is either M8×1.0 (fine thread) or M8×1.25 (coarse thread). Both fit an 8mm bore. Neither is visually obvious — a 0.25mm pitch difference is too small to eyeball reliably. Threading the wrong one in will feel deceptively smooth for a turn or two, then strip the bore before you know what happened.

The Easiest Way to Check Before You Order

Pull the existing bleeder screw and take it to a hardware store with a thread pitch gauge. Done in a minute. If you’d rather not pull it before having a replacement on hand, grab a spare M8×1.25 bolt and try threading it gently into the bore by hand. Goes in cleanly? You have 1.25. Won’t catch after the first turn? Try the 1.0. Stop at the first sign of resistance either way.

Never force a fastener into an aluminum hydraulic bore.

Do Brake Calipers and the Clutch Slave Share the Same Pitch?

On most vehicles, yes. The clutch slave and the brake calipers are often sourced from the same supplier or built to the same hydraulic standard, so the bleed screw pitch tends to match across the whole system. If you’ve already confirmed what your calipers take, check whether the slave agrees before ordering a separate size.

Which Pitch Shows Up on Which Vehicles

M8×1.25 is the ISO standard coarse thread for 8mm fasteners. It’s the default on the majority of Japanese and domestic vehicles: Honda, Toyota, Subaru, GM, Ford. If you’re on one of those and have no other information, 1.25 is the safer starting guess.

M8×1.0 (fine thread) appears more often on European applications. Certain Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, and Porsche hydraulic components run the fine pitch, as do some specialty aftermarket cylinders. If you’re on a European platform, go confirm rather than assume.

There are exceptions both ways. Measure first.

Choosing the Right Earl’s or Russell Bleeder

Earl’s solo bleeders and Russell Performance speed bleeders are the same product family, both under the Holley umbrella. They’re available in both pitches. Key part numbers to know:

  • Russell 639520 — M8×1.25, 24mm overall length
  • Russell 639550 — M8×1.0, 34mm overall length
  • Russell/Edelbrock 639620 — M8×1.25, 39mm overall length

Overall length matters as much as thread pitch. A bleeder that sticks too far into the cylinder body can contact internal components on certain slave designs. Compare the exposed thread length of your stock screw before ordering. When in doubt, shorter is safer.

If you genuinely cannot determine the pitch beforehand, order one of each. They cost a few dollars apiece. Start with the 1.25 and thread it in by hand — if it doesn’t catch cleanly in the first two turns, stop and try the 1.0.

One-Person Bleeding Once It’s Installed

The check-ball inside the bleeder tip lets fluid and air exit on the pedal stroke down, then closes between pumps so nothing gets sucked back in. Crack it open about a quarter turn, pump the pedal until clean fluid runs through, close it. No helper required.

Keep the reservoir topped up throughout. Let it run dry and you pull air right back into the system, and you’re starting the bleed over from scratch.
