Clutch Slave Cylinder Bleed Screw Thread Pitch: 8mm x 1.0 vs 8mm x 1.25 — How to Get It Right
Measure first, order second
Most clutch slave cylinders use an M8 x 1.25 bleed screw, and if you’re on a common domestic or Japanese platform there’s a decent chance that’s what you have. But not all of them, and the two pitches look nearly identical in hand. Ordering wrong means a return trip and a delay — neither of which you want mid-job.
The fix is simple: pull the existing bleed screw before you buy anything and confirm the thread pitch yourself.
What the numbers actually mean
The “8mm” is the outer diameter of the threaded shank. The second number — 1.0 or 1.25 — is the pitch: how far apart the threads are, measured in millimeters from crest to crest. Coarser pitch (1.25) means the threads are spaced a little farther apart. Finer pitch (1.0) packs them tighter.
You cannot reliably tell them apart by eye. Threading the wrong pitch into an aluminum slave cylinder body is a fast way to damage threads that are not easy or cheap to fix.
Three ways to confirm your thread pitch
Thread pitch gauge
The most reliable option. A basic metric gauge costs a few dollars and gives you a definitive reading in seconds. Pull the bleed screw, hold the gauge blades against the threads until one sits clean and tight, read the number. Done.
Factory service manual or parts lookup
Search the replacement bleed screw for your year, make, and model through a parts supplier or OEM source. The spec will be listed. This works well when you don’t have a gauge on hand.
Call the slave cylinder manufacturer
If you’re running an aftermarket unit — Tilton, McLeod, an OEM replacement from a different supplier — the tech line can confirm the thread spec directly. Takes five minutes.
Earl’s solo bleeders: what to know before buying
Earl’s self-closing bleed screws use a small internal check valve. Fluid and air push out when you apply pressure; the valve closes when you let off the pedal. One person can bleed the system without anyone pumping inside the car. They work, and they’re a legitimate convenience upgrade.
Beyond thread pitch, check the overall length of your original screw before ordering. The Earl’s replacement needs to be a close match. Too short and you lose seating depth. Too long and the tip can contact internal components — some slave cylinder designs have tighter clearance than others. Hold your old screw next to the new one before you install anything.
The clutch slave is not the same as the brake calipers
A lot of people pick up speed bleeders for all four corners and then realize the clutch slave also needs attention — usually because they’re flushing fluid or have air in the line after a clutch replacement. The slave bleeds the same basic way a caliper does, but the bleed screw spec can differ from whatever the brakes on that same car use. Don’t assume they match just because they’re the same nominal diameter.
Bleeding the clutch line solo
Once you have the right screw installed, crack it open about half a turn. Pump the clutch pedal from inside the car, slowly and fully. Keep the reservoir topped up — letting it run dry pulls air back in and you start over. When the fluid flowing out is clean and bubble-free, close the bleeder and check pedal feel at the top and bottom of travel. A pedal that still feels spongy after several full strokes usually means air is still somewhere in the upper section of the line or at the master cylinder, not the slave.
