How to Section an NB Miata Rear Bumper: Cutting Out the Scoop for Cleaner Aero
The NB Rear Bumper Scoop Problem
The 1999–2005 Mazda Miata (NB chassis) rear bumper has a pronounced lower valance that curves back and outward, forming a deep cavity. At speed that cavity pressurizes with turbulent air — the parachute effect NB track drivers have griped about since the car was new. The go-to fix is pulling the cover entirely. That works, but it leaves fuel tank, exhaust components, and the rear well exposed to road debris, and the car looks unfinished.
Sectioning solves both problems. You remove a horizontal band of material from the bumper, bring the two halves together, bond them, and refinish. The scoop disappears. The car keeps a clean, finished tail. And the result often looks lower and meaner than stock.
What Sectioning Actually Is
People mix up sectioning with chopping and shaving. They’re different operations. Chopping removes height from a roofline. Shaving removes surface trim. Sectioning cuts a horizontal slice out of a body panel and closes the gap — reducing the fore-aft depth of a feature rather than its overall height.
On the NB cover, that means removing the band of material that forms the belly of the scoop, then pulling the upper and lower faces of the bumper flush to each other. The finished bumper follows the car’s lower body line without bellying out below it.
Tools and Materials
The NB cover is polypropylene (PP) or a thermoplastic olefin blend — materials that have almost no natural adhesion and that warp badly under heat. Your tool and product choices need to account for both.
- Oscillating multitool with a fine-toothed blade — far more controllable than a rotary tool and generates less heat than an angle grinder
- Long straightedge and wide masking tape for layout lines
- Paint marker or scribe for reference tick marks across the cut
- Adhesion promoter — skipping this is the single most common reason a repair fails in the first season
- Flexible plastic epoxy or a hot-air plastic welder
- Fiberglass cloth for backing strips on the inside of the joint
- Flexible polyester body filler — standard filler cracks on PP panels under flex
- Guide coat and sandpaper from 80 through 400 grit
- Flexible primer before color
Laying Out the Cut Lines
Do this with the bumper off the car on a bench. You need to identify two things: where the panel starts to bow outward (that’s your upper cut), and how much of the scoop belly to remove (that determines the lower cut).
Mark both lines with masking tape. Then step back and check something most guides skip: the tape must run parallel to the body line above the bumper on the actual car, not parallel to your bench or the floor. Even a couple of degrees of tilt relative to the car’s real geometry will make the finished section look cocked once it’s bolted back on. Test-fitting the cover before you cut and transferring the reference line from the quarter panel edge is worth the extra twenty minutes.
Once the tape looks right, run a paint marker across each cut line in several places — tick marks that span both the piece you’re keeping and the piece you’re removing. These let you realign the halves accurately after the saw goes through.
Making the Cuts
Upper line first, then lower. Cut slowly and let the blade do the work — forcing it generates heat that melts and deforms the edge. After both cuts, dry-fit the upper and lower sections together on the car before touching any adhesive. Check the gap, check the alignment with your tick marks, check that the bumper sits right against the body. You can always take a little more off. You can’t add it back.
Bonding the Joint
This is where DIY bumper sections fail most often. Polypropylene rejects most adhesives without surface prep, and a bond that looks fine on the bench will crack apart after a season of temperature cycling and flex on a track car.
The sequence:
- Scuff both mating surfaces on the back side of the panel with 80-grit
- Clean with wax-and-grease remover and let dry completely
- Apply adhesion promoter and let it flash — read the product’s time spec, usually just a few minutes
- Lay fiberglass cloth strips across the joint on the inside face using a PP-compatible epoxy, overlapping both halves generously
- Let the epoxy cure fully before moving the piece
If you have a plastic welder, hot-stapling across the joint before laying the fiberglass adds mechanical reinforcement that outlasts adhesive alone. On a track car, worth doing.
Filling and Finishing the Face
Flip the bumper face-up. The joint will have a small step or gap — skim it with flexible filler, not standard filler. Block-sand flat. Use guide coat to reveal low spots, repeat until the surface is true. On a track car the standard here is “doesn’t telegraph through paint,” not show-car smooth.
Prime with a flexible primer, cut it back to 400, then shoot your color. A visible color mismatch pulls the eye far more than a clean section line, so if the rest of the car is in worn track livery a rattle can that’s close enough reads fine. If you’re matching factory paint and the car has aged, have it sprayed — polished-new paint next to weathered original looks worse than a slightly rough section.
Aero and Handling Gains
The NB scoop is one of the largest low-pressure drag sources on the rear of the car outside of an open wheel well. Removing it won’t transform straight-line speed, but it cleans up separated flow behind the rear axle. On circuits with meaningful straights, track drivers consistently report better high-speed stability and less buffeting when running close behind another car.
There’s a secondary benefit if you run any form of rear diffuser: a tight, flat lower bumper gives the diffuser a cleaner exit plane and reduces the chance of flow separation just aft of the rear axle centerline. The section also moves the visual balance of the rear end upward, which looks right on a lowered car in a way the stock scooped cover never quite did.
