What that residue on your old shock bolts actually is

That dry stripe on the threads of your old shock mount bolts isn’t leftover Loctite from a previous job. It’s a factory nylon patch — a pre-applied mechanical threadlocker heat-fused to the fastener during manufacturing.

Companies like Nylok and ND Industries have been supplying these coatings to automakers since the 1940s. The nylon powder bonds to the threads at the factory. When the bolt is installed, it compresses against the mating threads and acts as a wedge, resisting vibration-induced loosening without any liquid compound involved. No cure time, no runoff onto adjacent rubber bushings. Dry on the shelf, ready on the line.

This matters for replacement. A factory nylon stripe tells you the OEM specifically engineered vibration resistance into that fastener. A completely bare OEM bolt means the design relied on torque alone — or expected anti-seize.

What to do with the replacement bolts

First, check whether the new bolts came pre-coated. Quality OEM-sourced replacements often include the nylon patch already applied. If they do, just torque to spec and leave it alone. Don’t layer liquid threadlocker on top — the patch handles retention, and stacking compounds can throw off your torque reading.

If the new bolts are bare metal, blue Loctite (242) is the standard substitute. Medium-strength, cures around the threads without migrating, and removable with normal hand tools when it’s time to replace the shocks again. Apply a small amount to the first few threads, torque to spec, done.

One step people skip: clean the bolt and receiving threads with brake cleaner before applying anything. Oil or grease on the threads prevents chemical threadlocker from curing properly, and you end up with false security.

Blue vs red — and where anti-seize fits in

Red Loctite (271) requires heat around 500°F to weaken enough to disassemble. That’s a commitment. Shocks wear out and need replacing — you don’t want to be fighting a seized bolt with a blowtorch when that time comes. Unless the vehicle’s service manual specifically calls for red, don’t use it on shock mounts.

Anti-seize is a popular third option, especially in areas where cars see salt and road grime for months at a time. The logic is practical: a stuck shock bolt on a rusted subframe can eat up hours of shop time. Anti-seize prevents that.

The tradeoff is that anti-seize lubricates the thread interface, which means the bolt develops more clamping force at the same applied torque than a dry bolt would. Most people just torque to spec and don’t notice a problem. If you’re going by the book — or it’s a car that sees track use — factor in a slight torque reduction to stay within the intended clamp load.

Does threadlocker change your torque spec?

Loctite’s official guidance says to torque to the dry specification — no adjustment needed. Some automotive engineers push back on that and suggest reducing by 10–20% to account for the lubricating properties of the compound. The engineering forums have been arguing about it for years without a tidy consensus.

For a rear shock mount on a street car, the practical difference is small. What matters more is thread cleanliness before application. A contaminated surface that prevents proper cure is a bigger risk than being a few percent off on torque.

When the manufacturer says skip it entirely

Some OEMs explicitly prohibit threadlocker on suspension fasteners that pass through rubber or polyurethane bushings. Those bolts are designed to clamp a specific amount, and if a lubricating compound allows the nut to spin further than intended, you end up compressing the bushing beyond its designed geometry — which shows up as handling quirks and accelerated bushing wear.

For shock mount upper and lower bolts specifically, most service manuals either call for a nylon-patched bolt at a set torque, or specify torque-only with no compounds. Check yours before reaching for any bottle. If the residue on the old bolt was a nylon stripe and the new bolts don’t have one, that’s the clearest signal of what the car actually needs.
