GM Auto Transmission for Your V8 Miata: 4L60E, 6L80E, and 8L90E Compared
Start with the 4L60E
For a V8 Miata running an automatic, the 4L60E is the standard answer — and there’s a reason it keeps coming up. It uses the same F-body bellhousing pattern that most NA and NB Miata swap kits are built around, so the physical fit is about as close to bolt-in as a V8 conversion gets. Shift logic is managed by the engine PCM, which means no separate transmission control module and no CAN bus to negotiate.
Stock torque capacity sits around 360 lb-ft. For a naturally aspirated LS, that’s enough. If you’re going forced induction and pushing well past that figure, you’ll want to look at either fortifying the internals or stepping up to the 4L80E — but a street LS1 or LS3 won’t tax it under normal use.
Source a 1999-or-newer unit for direct LS compatibility. Earlier 4L60E cores used a 298mm torque converter; LS engines want the 300mm. Getting that wrong can mean machining or sourcing an adapter — an easy mistake to sidestep if you buy the right year from the start.
What about the 4L80E?
The 4L80E handles considerably more torque and has been used in serious horsepower builds. But it’s heavier, longer, and wider at the pan. In a Miata’s already-tight tunnel, that bulk means clearancing the passenger-side tunnel wall. Not an impossible job — but not a bolt-in either.
It tips the scales around 175 lbs dry, roughly 30 lbs more than the 4L60E in a car where every pound has somewhere to go. For most street or weekend-track builds, it’s overkill unless the 4L60E is genuinely hitting its limits. High-power turbo builds are the real use case here.
The 6L80E: six gears, one extra problem
The 6L80E is easy to get excited about. Six close-ratio forward gears, better cruising economy than either four-speed option, and it actually measures shorter overall than the 4L80E at around 29 inches. On paper it reads like a straight upgrade.
The catch is the electronics. The 6L80E has its own TCM that communicates over GM’s CAN bus — it doesn’t integrate into a standard LS engine harness the way the 4L60E does. You’ll need either a standalone transmission controller (US Shift makes dedicated units for this application) or significant wiring work to make it function. Solvable, but it’s a project inside the project.
Weight runs around 195 lbs dry. In a Miata where builders obsess over saving kilograms, that’s a real number to weigh against the gear-ratio benefits.
The 8L90E: built for LT engines, not LS
The 8L90E arrived in 2014 alongside GM’s Gen 5 LT platform — C7 Corvettes, fifth-gen Camaros, full-size trucks. Eight forward gears, a 4.56 first-gear ratio, adaptive shift control, solid factory power handling. It’s a capable unit.
But it was designed around LT engine management architecture. The TCM talks over a full-duplex serial bus that is tightly integrated with LT ECU systems — and it simply doesn’t negotiate cleanly with older LS electronics. Builders have made it work, including at least one documented LS2 and 8L90 build in the Miata community, but that required a standalone controller and a lot of tuning patience. If you’re already committed to an LT engine swap, the 8L90E is a reasonable conversation. Running an LS? It’s a fight you don’t need to pick.
Manual or auto — does it actually matter?
Depends what the car is for. Autocross, canyon driving, and track days generally favor the T56 or T56 Magnum manual — direct feel, no converter slip, and shift times as fast as your hands. Budget-minded builders have also run Nissan 6-speeds behind LS engines when T56 prices climbed out of reach.
Auto makes more sense for drag-strip builds or a street car that sees stop-and-go traffic. The torque converter acts as a cushion on hard launches, which can genuinely help with traction when the power numbers get large. If daily driveability matters more than autocross splits, going auto isn’t a compromise — it’s just a different priority.
One honest weakness of the 4L60E in performance use: shift speed. Stock, it’s slow. An aftermarket valve body and a tune help considerably, but don’t expect crisp paddle-shift response without spending money on the transmission itself beyond the swap cost.
