Why Wider Wheels Fix Light Steering — And Why Offset Matters More Than Width

Light steering and what’s actually causing it

If your steering feels light or vague — like you’re turning the wheel but the car isn’t really communicating back — the most likely culprit is scrub radius. Specifically, not enough of it. Before you blame the rack or assume something’s worn out, it helps to understand what scrub radius is and how your wheel choice directly controls it.

What scrub radius is

Draw a line through your suspension’s steering axis (the kingpin axis — the imaginary line your front wheel steers around) down to the road surface. Then find the center of your tire’s contact patch at the road. The distance between those two points is your scrub radius.

Zero scrub radius produces a notoriously numb, disconnected feel. The tire doesn’t scrub at all when you turn, so almost no feedback travels back up through the wheel. A small positive scrub radius — where the steering axis line meets the road inboard of the contact patch center — is what gives most street cars that pleasant, weighted feel without making them exhausting to drive.

Most OEM setups are engineered to a specific scrub radius that balances feel, stability, and refinement. Change your wheels and you change this number.

How going wider affects steering weight

A wider wheel pushes the contact patch outward. The steering axis doesn’t move. So the gap between those two points grows — more scrub radius, more steering weight, more feedback. That’s the mechanism behind the advice to run wider wheels for better feel, and it’s valid.

But the effect depends almost entirely on offset.

Offset: the variable most people overlook

Wheel offset (ET, from the German Einpresstiefe) is the distance in millimetres between the wheel’s hub mounting face and its centreline. A high positive ET pulls the contact patch inward, closer to the steering axis. A low or negative ET pushes it out.

You can buy a 10mm wider wheel and, if you pick a proportionally higher ET to compensate, end up with almost identical scrub radius — and nearly identical steering feel. Conversely, a modest width increase paired with a meaningfully lower ET can shift the feel noticeably. Width and offset work together. Treating them separately is where most people get confused.

A practical guideline: staying within ±15mm of your OEM offset keeps geometry close to factory spec. Go further outboard than that and you’re adding real scrub radius — heavier steering, yes, but also more kickback over bumps and, on FWD cars, more torque steer under hard acceleration.

The trade-offs worth knowing before you buy

More scrub radius isn’t a free lunch. There are genuine compromises.

  • Bump steer and kickback. A larger scrub radius amplifies the forces that kick back through the steering wheel when you hit a pothole or kerb. Track cars often benefit from this because it’s informative. Daily drivers may find it tiring.
  • Torque steer. On FWD cars, more positive scrub radius means more pull under hard acceleration. Worth keeping in mind before going very low on the ET in a hot hatch you drive every day.
  • Bearing and tyre wear. Pushing the wheel far outboard increases load on the wheel bearings and can cause uneven tyre wear if you go extreme. It’s not something a modest change will cause, but it matters at the far end.

The sweet spot for most street builds is enough outboard offset to increase scrub radius noticeably without getting into annoying kickback territory. That usually means 10–20mm less ET than stock, not 40mm.

Other reasons steering goes light

Wheels aren’t always the answer. If swapping to a wider, lower-offset setup doesn’t fix the vagueness, check these before spending more money.

  • Caster angle. Low caster kills self-centering force and makes the car feel dead on a motorway. If the car has been lowered without correcting caster, this is a common cause. Adjustable top mounts or caster correction plates can recover it.
  • Worn tie rod ends or rack bushings. Play in these components absorbs your inputs before they reach the wheels. Even a small amount of free play is felt immediately as vagueness.
  • Power steering calibration. Hydraulic systems that are over-assisted or have a lazy pressure valve feel artificially light. Some tuners adjust the valve to add weight back in.
  • Tyre pressure. Over-inflated tyres shrink the contact patch and make the car feel skittish and disconnected. Worth eliminating before anything else — it costs nothing to check.

Putting it together

If you want heavier steering through wheel choice, go wider and lower on ET — but check your OEM offset first. A modest starting point: something like 10–15mm wider with 15–20mm less ET will usually give you a noticeable improvement in feel without turning the steering into a workout on rough roads.
