Why Jalpa Springs Are Hard to Find — and What to Do About It
The Lamborghini Jalpa was built between 1981 and 1988, with fewer than 420 examples produced over that run. Replacement suspension parts don’t sit on warehouse shelves. When springs do surface on eBay or through a specialist, they go quickly — two listings in the same month is a lucky streak, not the baseline.
The upside is that a coil spring can be reproduced by any competent spring manufacturer, as long as you give them the right numbers. That’s where most people get stuck — not in finding a shop willing to wind a spring, but in knowing exactly which specs to capture before the search begins.
What to Measure Before You Do Anything Else
Pull one spring and record all of the following before you chase a source:
- Free length — the uncompressed height of the coil, measured with the spring standing upright on a flat surface.
- Outside diameter — measured at the widest point of the coil body, not the wire itself.
- Wire diameter — the thickness of the steel rod the coil is wound from. A micrometer gives the most accurate reading; calipers are workable.
- Total coil count — count every coil, including the closed end coils. Active coils (the ones that actually compress) are typically the total minus two ground end coils.
- End type — the Jalpa uses closed and ground ends front and rear.
- Spring rate — this is the one number you cannot get from a ruler.
Getting the Spring Rate Right
Spring rate, expressed in lb/in or N/mm, describes how much force it takes to compress the spring by one unit of distance. It’s the spec that most directly shapes handling behavior, and it’s the one most often overlooked when people go hunting for a replacement by eye.
You can calculate it from the physical dimensions using the standard torsion formula:
k = (G × d⁴) / (8 × D³ × n)
G is the shear modulus of spring steel (roughly 11.5 × 10⁶ psi), d is wire diameter, D is mean coil diameter, and n is active coil count. Small measurement errors compound fast — a half-millimeter error in wire diameter can shift the calculated rate by 10% or more. Measure twice.
The more reliable path is to take the pulled spring to a spring fabricator and have them load-test it on a compression rig. Most shops that do custom winding can measure rate in a few minutes and hand you a verified spec sheet you can send to any manufacturer you like.
Custom Winding vs. Hunting Original Parts
Original Jalpa springs do surface occasionally, usually bundled with a subframe or a larger suspension lot. Patience pays off if you’re not in a hurry. Condition is the real question. A spring that measures correctly after four decades may carry fatigue you can’t see, and a failure after installation is a far worse outcome than spending a bit more time sourcing new parts.
Custom winding is repeatable and predictable. Reputable spring manufacturers work in high-tensile chrome-silicon or chrome-vanadium steel and can produce a matched set from your spec sheet. When placing an order, a few details are worth being explicit about:
- Wire material — chrome-silicon is standard for performance coil springs.
- Surface treatment — powder coating protects against corrosion during storage and service.
- Same wire batch for both springs — minor inter-batch variation in material properties can create small left-right rate differences. On a car as light as the Jalpa, that imbalance is noticeable.
The Jalpa’s Suspension Layout
Both axles use unequal-length double wishbone geometry with coil springs over shock absorbers. The rear handles the bulk of lateral load transfer under hard cornering. If you’re sourcing springs for only one end of the car, getting the rear rate accurate is the higher priority — a front-rear imbalance that drifts from the factory spec will show up in handling quickly.
The Jalpa shares some suspension ancestry with the Urraco, but the springs are not interchangeable. Visual similarity across Lamborghinis of the period is not a reliable guide to fitment.
Document Whatever You Find
If you pull a spring and measure it, post the numbers somewhere public — a forum thread, a registry, anywhere. These specs almost certainly don’t exist in a single accessible document. The next person who needs to do this job will be starting from scratch unless someone records what they found.
