The S650 Mustang GT is the last manually-shifted V8 muscle car you can actually buy new. Chevrolet ended the Camaro, Dodge ended the Challenger, and the 2026 Mustang GT now stands alone in that segment. If you just drove one home, here is what is worth knowing early.
The Gen 4 Coyote V8
The 5.0L Ti-VCT Coyote makes 480 hp at 7,150 RPM and 415 lb-ft of torque at 4,900 RPM in standard GT trim. Add the active valve performance exhaust option and Ford rates it at 486 hp. The difference is small. What you actually notice is how rev-happy the naturally aspirated V8 feels past 5,000 RPM — that is where it sounds best and pulls hardest.
At highway speeds, the 3.55 rear axle ratio keeps the Coyote calm. Sixth gear at 70 mph puts you around 2,000 RPM. The EPA rates the six-speed manual GT at 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, and real-world mixed driving typically lands in the low 20s — consistent with what early owners are reporting.
Breaking In the Coyote: The Practical Approach
Ford does not publish a hard break-in interval in the owner’s guide, which frustrates new owners who want a specific number. The practical approach most experienced owners follow: vary your RPM and throttle load throughout the first 1,000 to 1,500 miles. Spending all of that time at a steady 2,000 RPM on the highway does not help the rings seat — they need real compression load. Short pulls at moderate throttle, mixed city and highway driving, and no full-throttle runs until after the first oil change is the sensible baseline.
The oil-life monitor will suggest 10,000 miles for the first change. Many owners do it earlier — somewhere between 3,000 and 5,000 miles — on the reasonable grounds that the first fill picks up machining debris and ring wear particles. The Coyote holds approximately 10 quarts, more than you might expect for a passenger car, but the 5.0 has a deep sump designed to prevent oil starvation under hard cornering and track-style load.
The MT-82 Transmission: Short Gates, Narrow Throws, Known Quirks
The Getrag MT-82 six-speed has been in the Mustang GT for years. It has a recognizable personality: short throws, narrow gates, and a tendency to reward precision over speed. The gate between second and third sits close enough to fifth that rushing the shift can put you in the wrong gear. It happens to nearly every new GT owner in the first few weeks. The muscle memory develops quickly, and the dashboard gear indicator helps while you are learning the box.
The Dark Horse gets the Tremec TR-3160 instead — a stiffer, more mechanically direct gearbox designed for heavier use. For street driving, the MT-82 is competent. If you plan serious road-course work, the Tremec is one of the real reasons to step up to the Dark Horse rather than the standard GT.
The Clutch: Hydraulic Actuation, No Separate Reservoir
The MT-82 uses a hydraulic clutch actuation system. This is different from the cable-and-quadrant setup on older Fox Body Mustangs, and the pedal feel reflects it — lighter, more progressive, and easier to modulate in slow traffic than you might expect from a 480-horsepower car.
A common point of confusion for new owners: there is no separate clutch fluid reservoir under the hood. The hydraulic clutch shares the brake master cylinder reservoir. Same brake fluid, same translucent plastic container on the driver-side firewall. If you need to check or top off the clutch hydraulic circuit, that is where to look. Ford uses this shared-reservoir design across most of its modern manual applications. For track use, some owners install a separate clutch reservoir to isolate the two circuits and reduce heat transfer between them — but for street driving, there is no practical need to change anything.
The 3.55 Rear Axle and Highway Behavior
The six-speed manual GT comes standard with a 3.55:1 Torsen limited-slip rear axle. This ratio is a sensible street compromise. It keeps the engine relaxed at cruising speeds while feeling sharp off the line. Owners who prioritize the drag strip often swap to 3.73s, which improves quarter-mile times at the cost of higher highway RPM and slightly worse fuel economy. For a weekend driver or a mixed-use car, the 3.55 is the right spec to leave alone.
Maintenance When the Owner’s Guide Leaves Gaps
The S650 owner’s guide is light on scheduled maintenance specifics — a complaint that goes back to the previous S550 generation. Ford’s general guidance for normal conditions is 10,000-mile oil change intervals using 5W-30 full synthetic. If you prefer a fixed schedule over the oil-life monitor, most owners doing their own maintenance target 5,000 to 7,500 miles, and shorter still if the car sits for long stretches between drives.
For DIY oil changes, the front fascia sits low enough that drive-up ramps give better filter access than jack stands alone. The roughly 10-quart capacity means bringing extra jugs — plan accordingly before you start draining.
