2GR-FE Flywheel, Clutch & Flexplate for Lotus Evora, Exige V6 and Emira: The Weight Question Answered

Picking rotating-assembly hardware for the 2GR-FE in a Lotus sounds simple until you notice how different the fitment requirements are across model years and engine variants. The MWR aluminum flywheel, the XClutch stages, and the IPS flexplate question all have overlapping but non-identical applications. Here is how they sort out.

Manual or IPS? That Question Comes First

Flywheels and flexplates are not interchangeable. Manual transmission Lotus models use a flywheel that interfaces with a clutch disc. IPS (Intelligent Precision Shift) automatic variants use a flexplate instead — it bolts the engine to a torque converter rather than a clutch. If you have the IPS, most of the aftermarket clutch and flywheel content out there simply does not apply to your car.

The flexplate on IPS models is replaced on condition. Look for cracks when the transmission comes out. There is no performance upgrade to be had here — just OEM replacement when needed.

The MWR Aluminum Flywheel

Monkeywrench Racing’s billet aluminum flywheel is the only aftermarket aluminum unit available for the factory-intercooled 2GR-FE Lotus applications. Fitment covers three vehicle families:

  • 2016–24 Evora 400 and all 400+ variants — factory intercooled, manual gearbox only
  • 2016+ Exige V6 with 380hp or more — the intercooled models only, not the 330–360hp cars
  • 2024+ Emira V6 manual — not IPS

That 380hp cutoff on the Exige is not arbitrary. The non-intercooled 330–360hp Exige V6 uses a different bellhousing setup and falls outside this part’s application. Cross the listings and the flywheel will not fit.

For the earlier naturally aspirated Evora and Evora S, MWR produces a separate aluminum flywheel under a different listing. Same engine family, different part number. An OEM Lotus steel flywheel is also available new if you want to replace a worn unit and keep the stock rotating mass — useful if you are sorting a tired drivetrain on a car that primarily does street miles.

What Flywheel Weight Actually Does

Lighter flywheels spin up faster and slow down faster. That is the whole trade-off in one sentence.

On a track car, that means throttle response that feels direct. Blip the throttle on a downshift and the revs respond immediately rather than hanging. The engine also sheds revs faster when you lift, which makes heel-toe downshifts cleaner once you adjust your timing. For road racing or autocross, lighter rotating mass is almost always the right call.

On the street, the same behaviour becomes a liability at low speed. Getting the car moving from a dead stop — especially on a hill — requires more clutch slip to compensate for the reduced rotational inertia. In stop-and-go traffic, that gets tiring fast. The supercharged 2GR-FE has a flat enough torque curve that the effect is less harsh than on a naturally aspirated engine, but it does not disappear. Anyone who genuinely daily drives their Evora or Emira should factor this in before ordering the aluminum unit.

Steel flywheels store more energy at low rpm. That stored inertia is what smooths out idle, softens clutch engagement at low speed, and keeps the car from wanting to stall when you let the clutch out lazily. It is not exciting, but it matters if the car spends time in real traffic.

XClutch: Five Stages for the 2GR-FE

XClutch, designed and manufactured by Australian Clutch Services, offers five kit tiers for the Lotus Evora and Exige V6. Every kit pairs a clutch disc with a chromoly steel flywheel and a billet pressure plate rated at 42% more clamping force than the OEM unit. The disc is where the stages actually differ:

  • Stage 1 — Organic Sprung: Closest to stock engagement feel. Smooth take-up, long service life. Suited for street driving with mild modifications.
  • Stage 2 — Ceramic Segmented: Higher torque and heat capacity than Stage 1. A segmented ceramic disc with a marcel spring retains some engagement softness. Street-usable.
  • Stage 3 — Carbon Race: Single unsprung carbon disc. Engagement is firm and less forgiving at low speed. Designed for track days without going to twin disc.
  • Stage 4 — Twin Disc Sprung: Track-oriented, but the sprung hub design keeps some street-usable engagement character.
  • Stage 5 — Twin Disc Unsprung: Full motorsport spec. Not practical for road use.

The disc type matters as much as flywheel weight when you are thinking about daily driveability. A Stage 3 or higher clutch paired with the MWR aluminum flywheel is a demanding combination in traffic. Stage 1 or Stage 2 with the aluminum flywheel is a reasonable middle ground for a car that splits time between street and circuit.

Practical Pairings by Use Case

  • Street primary, occasional track days: OEM Lotus clutch and flywheel combo is the safe call — proven, heavier steel flywheel, easier to live with in traffic. Or MWR aluminum flywheel with XClutch Stage 1 if you want lighter rotating mass but still need civilised daily manners.
  • Track primary, some road driving: MWR aluminum flywheel with XClutch Stage 2 or Stage 3. Expect more clutch effort at low speed and less forgiveness in slow traffic.
  • Dedicated track car: MWR aluminum flywheel with XClutch Stage 3, 4, or 5 depending on power level and how hard the clutch will be worked. Stage 5 twin disc is for cars that rarely leave circuit.
  • IPS automatic: OEM flexplate replacement as needed. No flywheel or clutch upgrade applies.
