S197 V6 Autocross Suspension: Real Choices, Real Trade-offs, and Your SCCA Class
Start with the decision that shapes everything else
For an S197 V6 autocross build, the first real suspension question isn’t which brand to buy. It’s whether to go the Koni Yellow plus separate spring route, or move straight to coilovers. Both work. The choice affects your budget, your setup flexibility, and which SCCA Solo class you end up in.
That last point catches a lot of V6 builders off guard.
The Koni Yellow + springs route
Koni Yellows have been the default autocross damper for S197s for years, and there’s a simple reason: they’re externally adjustable from soft to firm in about three minutes, without pulling the shock. At an event, that matters. You can change the tune between runs without a jack.
Paired with Eibach Pro springs or H&R springs, the car drops a moderate amount and picks up real stiffness without becoming brutal on road sections. This combo keeps the street manners intact for the drive home from an event. Maximum Motorsports springs are another popular match for the Koni, running progressive rates that some drivers prefer for the way the car loads up mid-corner.
Most S197 autocrossers end up somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 turns from soft on the Koni adjustment, depending on surface and personal preference. Front and rear settings often differ by a half-turn or more.
Coilovers: more flexibility, more decisions
KW, BC Racing, Pedders, and ST coilovers all have users in the S197 community. The appeal is clear: height adjustability, a wide spring rate range, and one purchase that covers damping and spring together.
The catch for V6 builds is class placement. Some coilover setups categorize the car differently under SCCA Solo rules than a Koni plus spring setup would. The V6 can be competitive in the right class. A class bump into territory dominated by GT owners with more tire budget changes that math quickly. Check the current SCCA Solo rulebook before you buy. Look specifically at which class the V6 falls into with the mods you’re planning.
Maximum Motorsports vs. Steeda
These two specialists dominate the S197 suspension conversation, and both are legitimate. Maximum Motorsports has the deeper engineering track record. Their control arms, camber plates, and subframe connectors are the parts other companies get compared against. The quality is there; so is the price.
Steeda’s parts fit well, ship reliably, and their rear control arms are a frequent recommendation because they don’t stress the torque boxes the way some aftermarket arms can. The Stop the Hop kit plus sport springs is a popular starting point for autocrossers who want meaningful improvement without going all-in at once.
For a V6 build, Steeda often makes sense as the first phase. Maximum Motorsports parts scale better if the build gets more serious down the road.
Sway bars
The stock rear sway bar is undersized for autocross. That’s not a controversial take at this point. It’s one of the most consistent observations across S197 autocross builds going back years. Upgrading it makes a noticeable difference in how the car rotates through slower corners.
Steeda competition sway bars are popular on the S197, running a 35mm front and a 1.25-inch rear. Whiteline and Eibach also have active followings. The feature to prioritize is adjustability: being able to soften the rear bar slightly gives you a rotation tool at the event. Front bar adjustment affects understeer balance more directly than almost anything else in the suspension.
Camber plates and alignment
The stock S197 front strut tops don’t provide enough camber range for autocross. Around -3 degrees up front is where most competitors want to be. You can’t reliably get there without aftermarket camber plates.
Maximum Motorsports and Vorshlag are the two most consistently recommended options. Steeda makes plates that work well for street and autocross duty if you’re already in their ecosystem. Whichever you pick, a proper alignment afterward is not optional. Have the shop set caster as well as camber. Caster affects mid-corner steering feel more than people expect, and it’s easy to miss if the shop isn’t used to performance setups.
A sensible build sequence
Dampers and springs first. Then camber plates and alignment. Sway bars after that. Coilovers and control arms can wait until you know which class you’re targeting and how far the build is going.
Adding parts in that order lets you feel each change clearly. The S197 chassis responds pretty directly to suspension work, which makes the incremental approach actually useful rather than just methodical.
