Front Wheel Clicking Noise: Why Strut Mount Bearings Sound Nothing Like the Videos

When a strut mount problem doesn’t sound like a strut mount problem

Search for “strut mount noise” and most of what you find is a heavy thud or knock — the kind that reverberates through the cabin every time you hit a dip. But there’s a version of this fault that sounds completely different: a sharp, metallic click. Higher pitched. Sometimes faint. And it almost never shows up in the same YouTube searches, which is why so many people end up second-guessing a correct diagnosis.

The strut mount and the bearing inside it are not the same thing

This is where most of the confusion starts. People refer to “the strut mount” as a single component, but it’s an assembly. Inside the mount sits a small bearing — sometimes called the strut bearing or top mount bearing — that allows the strut to rotate when you steer. The two parts fail differently and sound different when they do.

When the mount body degrades — rubber perishes, the housing cracks or separates — you get a dull, damped thump. It’s structural and low-frequency. That’s the noise in the videos.

When the bearing inside the mount wears out, the sound is metal-on-metal contact. Small, precise, sharp. It often shows up as a click or tick rather than a knock, especially when turning or when the front suspension loads up over small surface changes. Same assembly. Same repair. Completely different acoustic character.

Why the metallic click is easy to misread

The clicking version is quieter and higher-pitched. It doesn’t rattle your fillings. Some drivers notice it for months before it gets loud enough to feel urgent, and because it doesn’t match the reference videos, they assume it must be something else. A tech who can actually reproduce and hear the noise in person is in a far better position to identify it than any video comparison.

The fact that a dealership tech confirmed they could hear it and matched it to a known pattern is meaningful. Strut mount bearing wear is well-documented across a wide range of makes, and the repair — replacing the mount and bearing together — is standard.

Wheel bearings: often replaced at the same time

Wheel bearings sit at the hub and let the wheel spin. Classic worn wheel bearing noise is a hum or drone that shifts pitch with speed, but they can also click — particularly if the bearing has developed a flat spot or if wear has introduced enough play to allow contact under lateral load.

Replacing strut mounts and wheel bearings together is common practice. The suspension is already partially apart, the mileage on both components is usually similar, and the labor overlap makes it cost-effective to address both while you’re in there. It’s not upselling for its own sake.

One thing worth ruling out: CV joints

If the click is most pronounced on full or near-full steering lock — backing out of a parking space, tight U-turns — that’s a CV joint pattern. The constant-velocity joints at the ends of the front driveshafts produce a very rhythmic, repetitive metallic click under those conditions, caused by wear or dried-out grease inside the joint.

CV joints are not part of a strut mount diagnosis, so they wouldn’t normally be caught in the same inspection. If after the repair the clicking only shows up specifically during tight turns, that’s the thing to flag.

What to check when you pick the car up

There’s no break-in period for this repair. The noise should be gone immediately. Before leaving the lot, take a slow loop around the parking area — some turns, a couple of small bumps if possible — and listen. Any residual clicking is worth pointing out right there, not a week later. Either something wasn’t seated properly, or the diagnosis was incomplete.

It’s also reasonable to ask whether the CV boots were inspected while the suspension was apart. Checking them costs almost nothing when everything’s already accessible, and catching a cracked boot early avoids a full CV joint replacement down the road.
